Second Tiny Forest planted in Exmouth’s Brixington Park
East Devon is one of the first districts in the country to trial the groundbreaking Tiny Forest technique, helping to add vital green spaces and wildlife habitats. Trees have been planted close together in the expectation that competition will encourage the forest to grow faster than traditional woodlands.
This project was made possible thanks to the hard work of dozens of residents, school children and teachers from Brixington Primary Academy, as well as Exmouth Tiny Forest Group, Exmouth Wildlife Group, Exmouth in Bloom, Suez staff from household recycling centre, East Devon District Council’s Exmouth Area Officer, and Parks and Gardens Officer; all of whom joined forces for the planting day on Friday 17 January 2025.

Council project helps to address food insecurity in East Devon
50 local people from low-income households have developed in confidence and skills to cook healthy meals, thanks to a partnership between East Devon District Council and Axminster-based charity Project Food.
Hands-on cooking sessions, free recipe boxes, and support through schools, food banks, and mental health services, were delivered through the project, backed by the council, with UK Government funding.

4,951 tonnes of glass collected from East Devon households last year
A big thank you for recycling as much of the glass that you use as you can.
Glass is readily recyclable into new glass containers so please put all of your jars and bottles into your recycling box for collection at the kerbside. Aluminium bottle tops and jar lids can go in your recycling sack and these valuable items will get recycled with all the other aluminium items we collect.

Countryside Team ensures no wood is wasted during storm clearance
Following tree falls caused by storms, such as Storm Eowyn, which affected East Devon last weekend, the Countryside team act promptly to ensure visitors' safety at local nature reserves.
At Holyford Woods Local Nature Reserve, the team only remove branches that pose a danger or block pathways, allowing natural regeneration to take its course. Dead wood plays a crucial role in the ecosystem, serving as a food source for wildlife, fostering fungi growth, and providing habitat for plants such as mosses, lichens, and ferns.
Fallen trees and branches that are cleared are repurposed for a variety of projects and uses. This includes producing eco-friendly charcoal, which is available for purchase (from Colyford Post Office, Dart’s Farm, and the Grazing Cow near Honiton), firewood for heating the on-site office at Seaton Wetlands, and providing material for the popular spoon carving workshops, where participants can learn the traditional craft.

StreetScene teams tidy up East Devon after Storm Éowyn
Seaton promenade was cleared of pebbles and debris following Storm Éowyn by the StreetScene Axe Valley team. They used a variety of tools including an electric brush sweeper, blowers and brooms to make sure the promenade is clear for the popular Seaton Parkrun event (that takes place from 9am every Saturday).
Businesses: comment on new Cranbrook commercial unit proposals before Monday
Small business owners are invited to respond to the new ‘Cranbox’ scheme proposals. This would involve the development of small business units and shops in the heart of the town. There’s high demand for space in East Devon’s newest town and we want to know more about the type of space you may need.
Complete the survey before 9am on Monday 3 February 2025, it should take you no more than five minutes.
