Hello,
In this week's newsletter, read about these stories and more:
Weather warnings issued for the end of the week and weekend
Yellow and amber weather warnings have been issued by the Met Office, with heavy rain and strong winds expected to impact East Devon over the next few days and into the weekend.
There is the possibility of travel delays, road and rail closures, power cuts and the potential risk to life and property.
Please take care and remember to:
- Keep an eye on the weather forecast and Environment Agency advice. The Met Office shares weather warnings, and you can sign up to receive these and flood alerts in your inbox.
- Check before you travel, in case roads and public transport routes are affected. Follow Devon County Council's Roads and Transport Team's Devon Alert pages on social media.
-
Report highways issues like flooding, blocked drains and fallen trees to Devon County Council.
- Help rough sleepers to access support by reporting sightings to StreetLink or our Housing Options team (0330 6782382 outside office hours).
- Be careful if you’re out visiting the coast, or one of our parks, or open spaces.
- Look out for friends, family, and neighbours, who may need extra support.
- Make a note of emergency contact numbers for services like water, electricity (105 for power cuts), and repairs.

Exmouth fly-tippers fined
Fly-tippers who illegally dumped construction waste in public bins along Exmouth seafront have been fined following an investigation by our Environmental Protection officers.
Fly-tipping is against the law, negatively impacts the local community, and undermines the hard work of council staff who are committed to maintaining Exmouth's stunning coastline. In this case, the bins had also been damaged and the health of StreetScene staff was put at risk.
After reviewing CCTV footage and receiving information from council officers and members of the public, two offenders were issued with Fixed Penalty Notices and each ordered to pay £400.
Any fly-tipping incidents should be reported via the East Devon District Council website.
Protect yourself against flu this Christmas
By the end of October, almost 155,000 school children in the South West had a nasal spray vaccine with many more vaccinated during November, but many are still missing out.
Flu vaccine uptake figures up to 31 October 2024 show 31.7% of pregnant women, 32.3% of people with long term health conditions and 64.8% of those aged 65 and over have taken up the offer of the vaccine in the South West
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is calling on South West residents to come forward for flu vaccinations as latest figures show that many eligible people are still to take up the vaccine.
Recycle your used vapes
Vapes contain valuable materials such as copper and lithium, which can be recycled.
Please do not place your used vapes into your recycling boxes or waste bins as they could ignite if damaged or crushed. You can take them to your nearest Recycling Centre, as they have dedicated vape bins on site. To find your nearest Recycling Centre please visit the Devon County Council website.
You can also return your used vapes to a vape retailer, who should have the facilities for collection and recycling used vapes as part of a producer responsibility scheme.
The used vapes will be collected from the Recycling Centres and dismantled. The recyclable elements will be recovered and turned into new products. The non-recyclable items will be sent for energy recovery.
Thank you for recycling.
