Advice ahead of Storm Bert this weekend

A yellow weather warning has been issued by the Met Office for Storm Bert, which is expected to impact the East Devon area over the next 48 hours.

We are likely to see heavy rain and strong winds, with the potential for some flooding and disruption to travel. The forecast is showing an improvement in conditions from the start of next week.

Over the course of the weekend, please take care and remember to:

  • Keep an eye on the weather forecast and Environment Agency advice. The Met Office share weather warnings, and you can sign up to receive these and flood alerts in your inbox.
  • Check before your travel, in case roads and public transport routes are affected. Follow Devon County Council's Roads and Transport Team's Devon Alert pages on social media.
  • Report highways issues like flooding, blocked drains and fallen trees to Devon County Council.
  • Help rough sleepers to access support by reporting sightings to StreetLink or our Housing Options team (0330 6782382 outside office hours).
  • Be careful if you’re out visiting the coast, or one of our parks, or open spaces.
  • Look out for friends, family, and neighbours, who may need extra support.
  • Make a note of emergency contact numbers for services like water, electricity (105 for power cuts), and repairs.

Phase two of Exmouth seawall repairs to begin

A steel sheet pile wall being installed on Exmouth seafront, during the first phase, in April 2024

A further 150 metres of seawall will be secured with a steel sheet pile wall through the second phase of repairs to Exmouth’s sea defences.

Site set up for the second phase began on Wednesday 20 November 2024, with the seawall repair work scheduled to begin on Monday 25 November 2024. The second phase is expected to be completed in spring 2025. The aim is for the area to be fully reopened before the Easter holidays.

The pavement, and one lane of the road on Queens Drive, will be closed for the second phase of repairs to Exmouth's seawall, with temporary traffic management planned, from Monday 25 November 2024. Access to the beach from the slipway, next to Harbour View café, will remain open (but subject to temporary closures). Cordons on the beach, and marshals, will keep visitors a safe distance away from the construction work. If you're walking your dog in this area, please keep them under control, and use a lead if necessary.

Recycle your aluminium

Aluminium is the most valuable material East Devon's recycling crews collect from households. Please recycle all of your aluminium items including drinks cans, foil, foil trays, aerosols, and jar lids. These materials are a valuable resource and can be recycled over and over again.

Making aluminium from virgin ore uses huge amounts of energy. By recycling your aluminium packaging, you are helping to reduce energy use and helping fight climate change. Keep your aluminium in the ‘loop’!
