Exmouth Tiny Forest wins two awards at South West in Bloom ceremony

Exmouth Tiny Forest, with an information signpost in front

The Tiny Forest was established as a collaboration between Exmouth Tiny Forest Group, Devon County Council, East Devon District Council, and ParkLife Southwest, with funding support from the Woodland Trust’s Emergency Tree Fund and the Forestry Commission’s Local Authority Treescapes Fund

The tree-mendous Exmouth Tiny Forest project was awarded both the 'London and Manchester Trophy' for outstanding contribution to the environment and the 'Campaign for the Protection of Rural England (CPRE) Environmental Award'. This significant recognition comes just months after nearly 100 volunteers, ranging from ages three to 96, braved muddy weather to plant 600 trees in a 300-square-metre area at King George’s playing field on Carter Avenue.

Let’s work together to tackle damp and mould

East Devon District Council is backing a national campaign to raise awareness of the health issues associated with damp and mould in residential properties.

Starting on Monday, we will be sharing advice and support as part of the first Damp & Mould Action and Awareness Week.

Damp and mould can be a problem at any time but is particularly prevalent in the autumn and winter months. It is important to address the issues quickly, as they can be harmful to physical and mental health.

Read more about the campaign, and follow the council's social media channels for further advice during Damp & Mould Action and Awareness Week.

Innovative waste team tracks down keys put in recycling

Local resident, David Cameron, realised that he had misplaced his keys in the recycling, which had already been collected. David contacted the local team at SUEZ, who run the facility on behalf of East Devon District Council, and informed them of his lost keys.

SUEZ process all of the recycling for the East Devon area and receive approximately 400 tonnes of recycling per week. Luckily, it only took 15 minutes to find the keys using the tracking system on David’s phone. Had the keys been left for another 10 minutes, they could have been baled ready to be sent on for the next stage of recycling.’

A kitchen waste caddy surrounded by plastic food packaging bags

Line your food caddy with any plastic bag

As we approach the winter season with Halloween, Bonfire Night, and Christmas, East Devon's Recycling Team collect more food waste than at any other time of the year.

The best thing to do with food is to eat and enjoy it, however, even the most diligent shoppers and best cooks will always have some unavoidable food waste.

To make recycling your food waste easier and cleaner, line your caddy with any plastic bag. Residents tell us that bread bags and the liners to cereal packets are their food caddy liner favourites.

Please make sure you use your food caddy to recycle your unavoidable food waste. It is a very valuable resource which, once collected, we use to generate green energy and produce bio-fertiliser for farms. Find out what happens to your food waste on the Recycling Team's webpages.

Millwey Community Centre

Millwey Community Centre in Axminster temporarily closed

Due to structural concerns, Millwey Community Centre was temporarily closed earlier this month.

While it has been necessary to suspend some activities, East Devon District Council (EDDC) have advised residents of nearby alternative sites to access services like food banks and warm hubs, and the digital confidence workshops have been moved to the Community Waffle House.

EDDC are looking at all the options available to ensure that the needs of the local community are met. We hope to work with community groups as part of that process, so please contact the Tenant Participation Team if you, or someone you know, would like to be part of this discussion.

We are very sorry for the inconvenience, and we will share further updates as we investigate the building issues and work to rectify them as soon as possible.
