Recognised as some of the best in the country, East Devon's parks have received Green Flag Awards, the international quality mark for parks and green spaces.

Green Flag Awards were awarded to Sidmouth's Connaught Gardens and Peak Hill Slope, Exmouth's Manor Gardens, Seaton's Seafield Gardens (all managed by East Devon District Council’s (EDDC) StreetScene team), and Seaton Wetlands (managed by EDDC’s Countryside team).

Congratulations to Cranbrook Town Council and volunteers, who also received a Green Flag for their Country Parks.

The £10million investment will mean that East Devon District Council’s (EDDC) homes meet new housing regulations and safety standards introduced by the UK Government in April 2024.

Councillors discussed a report about the investment at EDDC’s Full Council meeting on Wednesday 17 July 2024.

Councillor Geoff Jung, East Devon District Council’s portfolio holder for Coast, Country and Environment, and Matt Blythe, Assistant Director for Environmental Health, with representatives from Devon & Cornwall Police at the launch of the hotspot policing initiative in Exmouth

The hotspot policing initiative aims to proactively disrupt crime, act as a deterrent, and to provide a reassuring presence to help people feel safe.

Councillor Geoff Jung, East Devon District Council’s portfolio holder for Coast, Country, and Environment, said:

“We are pleased to welcome this additional funding to enable a multi-agency approach to provide extra policing and patrols in Exmouth town centre and seafront this summer.”

Joint working between the police and council is vital to create impactful, long-term change. Devon & Cornwall Police crime data was used to identify the hotspot locations and create patrol plans which have been shared with partners.

‘Wish-cyclers’ asked to check before recycling

Photo of baking trays and pans found in recycling sacks by East Devon District Council

Baking trays, frying pans, saucepans, and electrical items, are amongst the items mistakenly placed in recycling sacks

‘Wish-cyclers’, who hope, rather than check, that an item will be recycled from the kerbside, are well-intentioned, however they risk contaminating other items that are put out for recycling. Flammable items, also discovered by East Devon District Council (EDDC) crews, endanger recycling vehicles, recycling plants, and the lives of staff.

Residents are being urged by EDDC to check whether an item is recyclable before putting it in their recycling sack, either on East Devon’s app, website, or by asking Alexa.

Do you know how to recycle cleaning products?

5 plastic trigger spray bottles

You can recycle plastic bottles with trigger sprays by putting the bottles and their triggers into your recycling sack.

If you're unsure if something is recyclable, visit the Recycling and Waste service's A - Z.
