Community orchards spruced up

Photos of tree planting at East Devon's community orchards

The proof of the pudding is in the eating, and the team are already looking forward to autumn’s harvest.

This week, despite the changeable wintry weather, orchards at Bidmead in Exmouth, Broadview in Broadclyst, Millwey in Axminster and Moormead in Budleigh Salterton have been pruned, tidied up, and some extra trees have been planted, making them an even better place for residents to connect with their local environment.

Older trees planted several years ago in Axminster and Budleigh Salterton are well developed, whilst younger trees planted in Broadclyst two years ago are still small.

Attendees removed stems that were misshapen, damaged, diseased or dead, allowing healthier trees to bear much more fruit.  Residents said that they were going to try out the knowledge and skills that they learnt from Paul, StreetScene’s Horticultural Technical Officer, on their own plants.

The Recycling Team would like to thank residents for recycling as much as they can

Cardboard is readily recyclable into new cardboard packaging, so please put all of your smaller cardboard into your recycling box for collection at the kerbside. Larger cardboard boxes, that are too large to fit into your recycling box, can be flattened and put underneath your recycling box to prevent them from blowing away in windy weather.

If at any time you have very large volumes of cardboard, our crews would appreciate it if you can put it out for collection over a few weeks. This helps prevent the cardboard section of the vehicle filling early in a round, causing the vehicle to return prematurely to the depot to unload.

The grant was used to purchase new static caravan equipment and bedding

Dream-A-Way are a charity helping to make dreams come true for Devon’s children and adults with disabilities or life affecting health conditions.

They offer very low-cost static caravan holidays to people with disabilities, terminal illnesses, cancer and other life limiting conditions, who would otherwise not be able to afford to get away.

Aerial view of Exmouth Seafront

Exmouth's BMP Update covers the seafront area from Orcombe Point to Exmouth Marina

Thank you to everyone who attended the first drop-in event about the Exmouth BMP Update at Exmouth Town Hall on Thursday, 15 February.

Representatives from East Devon District Council and its contractors discussed and answered questions about the project, which looks at the measures that can be taken to reduce the risks of flooding and erosion along the town's coastline.

To read more about the BMP and answers to frequently asked questions, visit the council's webpages.

Another drop-in session and a 12-week consultation will be taking place later this year.

Attendees of the drop-in event, and anyone who was unable to make it there, are encouraged to share their feedback before 1 March.
