 News and updates:
Holocaust Memorial Day
Councillor Eleanor Rylance, Chair of East Devon District Council, said:
“On January 27th 1945, Auschwitz camp was liberated and the horrific slaughter of millions of Jewish, disabled, and homosexual people began to be widely known. We must never forget those people murdered by the Nazis in the name of an appalling, out-of-control ideology that encouraged an entire population to look down on fellow citizens.
I will be spending time on Saturday thinking about the men, women and children who lost their lives. History sends us a strong message- will we heed it?”

Consultation closes, with residents' feedback shaping the Council Plan
This consultation was split into the priority areas of housing, the environment, the economy and core services
Thanks to everyone who shared their views in the consultation. Analysis of the 969 survey responses is currently underway, providing invaluable data that will inform the Council Plan.
Feedback will be reviewed at the last in a series of workshop sessions with stakeholders, district councillors, and senior officers on Monday, 29 January, where necessary changes will be discussed. The Council Plan will then be taken to Cabinet to make amendments. Once finalised in mid-April, it will be published on East Devon District Council's website.
If you have any queries or need more information, contact the Engagement team by email.

'Distorted' fly-tipping figures challenged by East Devon District Council
Newly-released fly-tipping figures have been challenged by East Devon District Council as giving a distorted view of the actual situation.
The authority has reassured residents that it investigates every single report of fly-tipping. StreetScene officers visit all tips on council controlled sites to check for evidence of those responsible and arrange rubbish removal.

Devolution for Devon and Torbay has taken a big step forward with the publication of Government proposals for a ground-breaking deal that could re-draw the future relationship between local government in Devon and Torbay, and Whitehall.
Sandy seafront started to be cleared after storms
The sand along the roads and paths on Exmouth seafront is being cleared, following a few spells of strong wind and rain.
Devon County Council is taking the lead, with East Devon District Council’s help, to return the sand to the beach using the ‘Storm Recovery’ fund from central Government.
The priority will be on the stretch from the RNLI down to Orcombe Point, with attention also on the stretch from Mickeys to the RNLI.
EDDC will also be looking to pull back the sand on the beach, in the near future, to stop it blowing over the wall again.

 Dangerous items in recycling sacks
The gas canisters in the image were put out for recycling, but were fortunately spotted by the vigilant depot team
Please note that fuel cans, such as the ones in the picture, present an explosion and fire risk in Recycling and Waste vehicles and the separation and baling plant.
Whilst we encourage the recycling of household aerosols (by putting them in your recycling sacks with your other household tins and cans), fuel cans of any size need to be taken to a household recycling centre for safe handling and recycling/disposal.
Please do not put fuel cans in your waste bin, as they present an explosion risk at the Energy from Waste plant and can lead to a plant shutdown.
Thank you for helping to protect the Recycling and Waste team and the plant.
