🎁Can I recycle Christmas cards and wrapping paper?

Presents wrapped with plain paper and string

✅ If they’re plain, you can put them in your recycling box.

❌If they have glitter or foil on them, we can’t accept them for recycling yet. Put these in your wheelie bin.

Cardboard

If you've been shopping online, you're likely to have lots of cardboard packaging. Please separate this from any other types of packaging, flatten it, and place it in your green box.

🥔Food leftovers

Recycle Devon have shared some tips and tricks such as portion planning, adjusting your fridge temperature, and what to do with leftovers, to help you save money and avoid wasting Christmas food.

Make sure you put the following items in your food recycling caddy👇

✅ Fruit and vegetable peelings
✅ Cooked and uncooked food
✅ Meat and fish (bones are ok)
✅ Plate scrapings
✅ Cat and dog food
✅ Tea bags and coffee grounds

You can line your caddy with any plastic bag or newspaper.

🧃Food and drink containers and packaging

  • Green box - glass bottles and jars
  • Green sack - metal cans, foil, foil trays, cartons, and hard plastics (pots, tubs, trays, and bottles)
  • We don't currently recycle soft plastics, but some shops such as Co-op, Morrisons and Tesco do

👚What to do with unwanted gifts

As textiles that are collected will be reused, please keep your donations clean and dry

Instead of binning presents that you don't want, donate these to a charity shop or community group. Alternatively, you could give these items away or sell them online on places like Facebook Marketplace.

Good quality textiles and shoes can be bagged and placed securely in your kerbside green recycling box, to go to The Salvation Army for reuse or sale, supporting people in need.

🔋Small electrical items

If you've got any small old electrical items, Christmas lights that don't work, or flat batteries, put these in separate plastic bags in your green box.

🎄Where to recycle real Christmas trees

If you have a real Christmas tree, and you've signed up for green waste collections, we can take your tree if it fits inside your green bin, with the lid closed and no branches are thicker than 10cm. To subscribe to the green waste service, head to the council's website.

There are also Christmas tree recycle points at towns across the district. To find out about the locations, times, and dates of these...
