Last Saturday, 29 October saw the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the arrival of Ugandan Asians to the Heathfield Resettlement Camp in Honiton.
The day was supported by EDDC and began at Blackdown House with the unveiling of a plaque and planting of a silver birch tree by EDDC Chair Councillor Ian Thomas. The anniversary then moved to the Beehive in Honiton and was marked with traditional music, singing and dance, as well as a platter of Asian food.
Touching speeches were made by fellow British Ugandan Asians who experienced life in the Honiton Resettlement Camp.
A special highlight of the day were the appearances of two individuals both born on the Camp, as well as the doctor who had delivered them fifty years ago.
Mobile Support Officers and volunteers start on the Churchill Court Garden renovation
EDDC's Mobile Support Officer and volunteers at Churchill Court, Lympstone
Braving the inclement weather on the afternoon of Tuesday, 25 October, a group of hardy East Devon District Council Mobile Support Officers and volunteers met at Churchill Court, Lympstone to commence a garden facelift which is set to run into early 2023.
Sheltered tenants who found themselves struggling to maintain their own garden area asked for help to get on top of overgrown areas outside their flats and around the community centre.
Work carried out included hedge trimming, pruning of shrubs, removal of seeded sycamore saplings, weeding, tidy up of a beautiful rose bed that was weed bound and leaf collection.
In total the group filled 6 wheelie bins and they plan to revisit Churchill Court at the end of each month for an afternoon session to continue improving the environment for the tenants.
A great sense of achievement was felt by everyone involved.

This week marked National Stress Awareness Day
We know what it is like to feel stressed and being under pressure is a normal part of life. But becoming overwhelmed by stress can lead to mental health problems or make existing problems worse.
There are many ways you can feel better. Every individual's stress-relieving activities may differ, but trying out new activities can give you a new spirit and motivation every day. Here are a few lifestyle changes you can try:
- Get outside more. Take some time during your day to go on a walk and get some fresh air.
- Watch a film or television show that will make you laugh. After all, laughter is the best medicine!
- Listen to music or a podcast. Why not turn the radio on as you get ready for work in the morning?
- Exercise. This doesn't have to be vigorous or time consuming, a simple brisk walk or a light jog is enough. Just try to do something that gives you a few moments to yourself and will release those much-needed happy hormones!
- Write down how you feel. Just a few sentences a day can help you to understand how and why you are feeling a certain way.
A small step each day will help you to gradually cope with stress. Please remember, you are not alone.
