Team work makes the dream work! Exmouth district councillors work together to assist resident

cllrs help

Exmouth district councillors were busy last weekend assisting an elderly disabled resident who has faced some challenges in the lane to the rear of her property in Waverley Road.

The lane at the rear of her property had been neglected and had become overgrown with weeds. She had contacted her ward councillor for Halsdon Ward, Paul Millar, who ascertained that the authority responsible for clearing the lane had it in their schedule for clearance but it would be some time before it was actioned.

Councillor Millar recruited some of his district councillor colleagues, Councillors Brenda Taylor, Joe Whibley and Fred Caygill to assist him in making life for his constituent less challenging.

As they were working to clear the part of the lane concerned, they were joined by a local resident and her young daughter who joined in to assist the councillors in their efforts.

Her husband very kindly provided a brew of tea as the task was reaching completion.

The councillors involved in this task suggest that many of these small estate tidying problems could easily be rectified by groups of residents in their own immediate community, getting together for a couple of hours on a Saturday morning and working to tidy their outside living spaces.

Thanks to all those who came along to the Burnside Macmillan coffee morning

macmillan

Last Friday, 30 September, the Burnside Mobile Support Officers along with the Burnside coffee morning club organised a fundraiser for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Various cakes and hot drinks were provided, and a raffle was organised - with prizes kindly donated by the coffee morning club and residents of Burnside itself.

Over 20 people attended, and raised over £116! Not only did everyone have a wonderful time, but it was an opportunity for residents in the local area to meet new faces and make new friends! The MSO’s would like to thanks all who attended and kindly contributed to the event.

If you would like to donate to Macmillan, please click on the link below. Any amount is most appreciated.

Recycling news

Nights are closing in, check your torches! Please recycle your batteries.

batteries

When recycling your batteries, please put them into a clear plastic bag before putting them in your recycling box for collection; a sandwich bag is ideal. This helps our crews separate them out when emptying your recycling box.

Keeping batteries separate in our vehicles and at the depot prevents fire risk.

Please do not put your batteries inside a cardboard box or wrap them in paper, as they can get missed and mixed up with paper and cardboard in the recycling vehicle and at the depot.

news extra

Teenagers could be missing out on a stash of cash

Tens of thousands of teenagers in the UK who have not yet claimed their matured Child Trust Funds savings could have thousands of pounds waiting for them.

Child Trust Funds are long-term savings accounts set up for every child born between 1 September 2002 and 2 January 2011. To encourage future saving and start the account, the government provided an initial deposit of at least £250.

The savings accounts mature when the child turns 18 years old. Eligible teenagers, who are aged 18 or over and have yet to access their Child Trust Fund account, could have savings waiting for them worth an average of £2,100.

If teenagers or their parents and guardians already know who their Child Trust Fund provider is, they can contact them directly. This might be a bank, building society or other savings provider.

Alternatively, they can visit GOV.UK and complete an online form to find out where their Child Trust Fund is held.

NHS urges people to do their bit as Covid patients increase

WINTER PROTECTION

The number of patients in Devon’s hospitals with Covid-19 has risen substantially over the last month. Around 250 people in hospital have tested positive for the virus, roughly five times the number in early September.

There are four main ways in which you can support the NHS:

  • Have the seasonal Covid and flu vaccinations, if you are eligible.
  • Stay away from hospitals, care homes and other healthcare facilities if you have symptoms of a contagious illness such as Covid-19, flu or norovirus.
  • Use the most appropriate service for your needs; your local pharmacy can help with minor ailments and NHS111 online with urgent needs.
  • If a family or friend is ready to be discharged from hospital, please pick them up as quickly as possible after you have been contacted.

Covid-19 autumn boosters can be booked through the National Booking Service or by calling 119 if you are unable to use the online service.  You can find your nearest walk-in clinic on NHS England’s site finder here

You can find a pharmacy near you offering the NHS flu vaccine online
