Exe Estuary hosts its most impressive natural event of the year

exe estuary

Anticipated brent geese start to arrive on the Exe Estuary

3,000 miles away in the northern arctic tundra, the iconic Brent Geese are on their way to Devon in search of food and milder climates. Their arrival heralds a spectacular time of year for wildlife on the internationally important Exe Estuary.

Watching them as they arrive in the autumn on the Exe Estuary and at Exmouth Duck Pond is enthralling and it’s easy to spot the family squabbles (and to relate to them!).

With these changes in mind, people are asked to avoid wildlife refuges on the Exe Estuary at Dawlish Warren National Nature Reserve (all year round) and Exmouth Local Nature Reserve (15 September to 31 December) to protect wildlife for future generations. The wildlife refuges are marked with yellow buoys with “WR” in black letters printed on them.

The Imperial Recreation Ground slipway in Exmouth can still be used to access the foreshore during this time, although everyone is being asked to turn left at the end of the slipway, to avoid the wildlife refuge.

Work starts on highly anticipated Cranbrook Town Centre

cranbrook new town centre

Construction of the new Cranbrook town centre started on Tuesday (30 August).

The consortium of developers, Henry Davidson, Hallam Land Management, Taylor Wimpey and Persimmon will start work on a supermarket, high street shops with homes above, a town square and a children’s day nursery.

This major milestone will ultimately provide a town centre that will serve the population of up to 20,000 people and other communities nearby. Completion for the supermarket and children’s day nursery is due next year and high street shops with apartments above are due to be completed in 2024.  There will be a fit-out period for the supermarket which will then enable it to open.

Two weeks of work to take place to the Sidmouth splash wall gates

sidmouth splash wall gates

Two of the splash wall flood gates in Sidmouth will be removed today (Friday, 2 September) to be refurbished. They should be back within two weeks.

They require refurbishment because they no longer close properly and it is important they are functional for the winter.

Although we aren’t expecting any sea storms, should that change, the gaps will be filled with sandbags.

Grab a taste of East Devon as its food festival begins tomorrow

Following the success of last year’s inaugural festival, Taste East Devon food festival is to run from tomorrow (Saturday 3 - Sunday 18th September), extending into a 16 day celebration.

Award-winning venues, producers, chefs and restaurants across East Devon have joined forces again to celebrate the incredible food and drink on offer across the region.

East Devon is uniquely placed with prized food treasures to discover across the region. It’s one of the only counties that has access to the best fresh seafood from the coast; its own native Ruby Red Devon Cattle; unique topography and climates that enable sheep farming to thrive; ancient, traditional orchards and beautiful coastal fields providing the perfect positioning for heritage vineyards. East Devon has been home to, and inspired generations of farmers and artisan producers for centuries and remains the perfect destination for all food lovers.

Recycling news

Please put textiles and shoes in a reused bag and in your green recycling box

textiles

The textiles we collect at kerb-side are passed to the Salvation Army, who re-use as many of the items as possible, which is why we try to keep the quality as high as we can.

Please put your textiles and shoes in a reused bag and in your green recycling box. It will keep them clean and dry to keep the value.

What can I give?

  • All clothing: clean and wearable
  • Shoes (in pairs)
  • Handbags
  • Belts, hats, scarves, gloves
  • Bed linen and blankets
  • Towels

Sorry we can’t take:

  • Duvets, pillows or ‘stuffed’ items
  • Curtains
  • Rugs
  • Toys
  • Rags

Unfortunately, we cannot re-use worn out or damaged clothing. Please put poorer quality textiles in your refuse bin and we will recover energy from them at the Energy from Waste plant at Exeter.

Some of the items are re-used in the UK through the Salvation Army charity shops and donation centres and the rest are sent for re-use in developing countries, where income levels do not always allow people to purchase new clothing.

Thank you for recycling.
