 News and updates:
Feniton Flood Alleviation Scheme railway crossing works to start
Works will commence at the end of August on the undertrack rail crossing for a new culvert pipe which will help reduce the flood risk to the village of Feniton.
The scheme will involve the building of a works compound and a manhole chamber on either side of the railway, before making use of the railway closure for engineering works to place the culvert under the railway, these works are due to completed by Friday, 7 October.
Essential Coastal Works to begin at Seaton Hole to trial low carbon technology
£150,000 worth of works to repair the existing sea defences at Seaton Hole will begin on Monday, 12 September.
Works will involve excavating the existing structure, repacking the existing rock, and pumping in new basalt reinforced concrete. Unfortunately the works will require the closure of the footpath from Seaton Hole to the beach, as concrete will need to be pumped down this access. The footpath is likely to be closed between Monday, 26 September to Wednesday, 19 October, meaning there will be no access to and from the beach to Seaton Hole above.
Essential £200k works to take place at Jacob's Ladder Seawall and the Millennium Walkway in Sidmouth
A total of £200,000 worth of works is set to take place to repair Jacob's Ladder Seawall and the Millennium Walkway in Sidmouth, as well as the ramp and hand railing with a wall, between 19 September until the start of November 2022.
The works will require the closure of the Millennium Walkway and Undercliff path during this time. Access will still be available from Jacob’s Ladder beach to the bottom of Jacob’s Ladder stairs, as well as to the Jacob’s ladder beach kiosk, however through access will not be possible between Jacob’s Ladder beach and Town Beach.
These works are essential, and we have timed them to avoid the best part of the year for residents and holiday makers, however this needs to be done before the winter storms.
Proposals published for creating a new Parish Council for the Parish of Colyford
© Ian Pain
East Devon District Council (EDDC) has published proposals for creating a new Parish Council for the proposed new Parish of Colyford.
The draft proposals follow a governance review that took place earlier this year. The proposals are:
That the new Parish Council be known as ‘Colyford Parish Council’ and not by one of the ‘alternative styles’ of community, neighbourhood or village.
- That the Membership will comprise of 7 councillors.
- That no warding provisions are incorporated in the Parish Council.
- The Parish Council will take effect with Parish Council elections in May 2023.
- The proposed boundary (subject to this further consultation) of the Parish Council to be as shown by the thick red line on the attached plan.
A formal period of 3 months from 23 August 2022 to 22 November 2022 is required for consultation with regard to these draft proposals. If the proposal proceeds there will be a consequential change to the number of Members representing Colyton Parish Council.
East Devon marks Ukrainian independence Day and appeals for host
On Wednesday we marked Ukrainian Independence Day and showed our continued support for the people of Ukraine and the continued support and generosity shown by residents of the district. There are currently over 240 Ukrainian guests living with hosts in East Devon - one of the highest numbers of Ukrainian guests in the county.
East Devon is still in real need of host families in Exmouth, Cranbrook and Honiton - especially those who are willing to have pets, in particular cats which were brought over by their owners from the war torn country.
If you would like to express an interest or find out more information about helping a Ukrainian refugee please visit this page.
Work starts on scheme to further protect the environment in Exmouth
South West Water has started work to upgrade some of the sewerage network in Exmouth as part of a wider project to protect bathing water and the environment while reducing pollution.
The work, which started on Monday, 22 August and is due to be completed in March 2023, involves upgrading the Phear Park pumping station with three new pumps and making improvements to the storm tank.
These improvements will increase the capacity of the pumping station, making it more resilient and helping to protect the local environment from pollution during heavy rainfall.
New 10mph signs installed at Phear Park in Exmouth
Go slow! We've had some new 10mph signs installed at the entrance at Phear Park in Exmouth, as well as along the access road and by the car park. Thank you to all the members of the public who raised their concerns about this.
Phear Park is a real jewel in Exmouth's crown and is well loved by children, dogs and their families and it's important to keep them all safe. Please drive carefully!
LED Community Engagement Team celebrate wellbeing walks
LED Community Leisure’s Community Engagement team welcomed their volunteer walk leaders from the amazing ‘Wellbeing Walks’ programme to a celebratory event at Ocean, Exmouth. Volunteers were treated to a relaxing walk to the beautiful Geo Needle viewpoint in Exmouth followed by a lovely lunch with a beautiful view and an awards ceremony.
Amongst those invited was 100-year-old Joy who has been walking with the Exmouth group for 20 years. Joy is a shining light of how walking can maintain both physical and mental strength as we enter into older age.
Wellbeing Walks started back in 1998 with 3 leaders and 1 walk. Now, 22 years later, LED hosts 6 walks a week supported by 65 volunteer leaders. Wellbeing Walks encourage people of all ages, including those with mobility issues and those recovering from illness, to stay active and healthy through regular walking. These walks are led by qualified volunteer walk leaders, who have undergone the Wellbeing Walk leader training.

Chris Duchenski gets into gear for Hospiscare
Leisure Manager for Axminster, Broadclyst and Honiton Leisure Centres, Chris Duchenski, recently took on a 6-hour studio cycling challenge at The Coffee Bank in Ottery St Mary. Chris put the pedal to the medal to raise money for Hospiscare in preparation for the London Marathon in October. On the day Chris managed to raise an amazing £110 for Hospiscare.
Chris said: "I had support from the team at The Coffee bank as well as family and friends too. I kept one bike going for 6 hours while the second bike was shared by the team at The Coffee Bank, family or friends doing 30 minute slots each. It's amazing to help support an amazing charity that does fantastic work within the community. I’m raising the money to show my support for the job their team does for community. Cycling for 6 hours is nothing for what the great team do for us in the community!"
Help to stop illegal raving before it starts
We want everyone to stay safe and enjoy themselves over the Bank Holiday weekend but remember – your idea of fun might not be somebody else’s.
Raves can cause huge environmental damage as well as disrupting the lives - and sleep - of people living nearby.
Help us to stop it before it starts. Visit our website for information on the signs to look out for and call 101 or contact CrimeStoppers if you have any concerns
Pharmacists on hand to help with minor conditions over the Bank Holiday weekend
If you’re feeling unwell this Bank Holiday weekend, remember your local pharmacist is on hand to help and can save you a long wait in your local emergency department.
Many people are unaware of the wide range of services available from their local pharmacist and spend time waiting unnecessarily for a GP appointment, minor injury unit or even in busy hospital emergency departments.
You can find your nearest pharmacy and check normal opening times online. Bank holiday opening hours are listed here.
