 News and updates:
Tributes paid after passing of EDDC's Vice Chair Councillor Val Ranger
Tributes have been made to East Devon District Council's Vice Chair Councillor Val Ranger who sadly passed away on August 2.
Public memorial service to be held to remember Val on Saturday, 17 September.
Val's family has decided they will be having a small private funeral which will take place in the coming weeks.
Due to the amount of people who would like to pay their respects to Val, a memorial/celebration of Val's life will be held on 17 September, between 12.30pm until 4pm, at The Pavilion at Newton Poppleford playing fields.
Everyone is welcome to attend (smart dress code) to pay their respect - there will be an informal service, allowing anyone who would like to say a few words or share a readings, to stand with Val's family and friends to remember and morn Val. This will then be followed by an afternoon tea, something Val loved, allowing everyone to remember Val in the way she would have wanted by sharing stories and memories.
We are so excited for Honiton Gate to Plate! Are you coming along tomorrow?
This Saturday, 20 August sees the return of the Honiton Gate to Plate event to Honiton's High Street. This free to attend food and drink festival is brimming with over 50 local producers, Thatchers Cider bursary winners and lots of free entertainment!
Organiser, Sarah Milner Simonds has commented:
"It is great to be able to showcase so many great producers alongside the fantastic businesses in Honiton. We are stretching from the New Street junction up to the roundabout - a different area to previous years but at the request of the businesses in that area."
Alongside the farmers market favourites will be street food, Punch & Judy shows, music, strolling entertainers and plenty of seating too.
Roads will be closed from 7am to 7pm and the event runs from 10am to 4pm.
The forecast is looking promising for an ace day ace and we are looking forward to another great annual event!
If you do attend, please make sure to take lots of photos and use the hashtag #eastdevonly so we can see and share!

One week left to fill out a survey and be with a chance of winning £200
Devon residents are being asked what the cost of energy means to them and what steps they take to ensure/adapt their homes to keep warm.
And whilst the current challenge is about keeping cool, in just a month or two, residents across the county will be turning their attention to keeping warm – whilst managing the costs of heating.
The survey will run until 26 August, with the findings used to inform local council plans to support residents.
And whilst the questionnaire is anonymous, all those that complete it are eligible to win shopping vouchers worth £200, plus two runners-up of £100. A prize sure to make a dent in those ever-increasing bills.
You don't have to start the new school year in debt to a loan shark, help is available
Money is tight. And with the cost of new school uniforms, equipment and sportswear – plus everyday living expenses – it can be difficult to manage on a regular income. Don't let loan sharks affect your family's future. It’s always worth talking to your child’s school to see what support is available - they often offer 'pre-loved' clothing at a reduced price.
If you need help with school uniform for your child, speak to us. Although we don’t have a specific school uniform grant, we do have the hardship fund for people requesting extra financial support which includes help with essentials. This can be accessed via our website.

 Recycling news
Extension of 6am starts for recycling and waste collections
Although we have passed another peak of very high temperatures, the hot weather is due to continue for sometime yet. Our collection crews are continuing to work as closely as normal through this extreme weather.
We would like to thank all those residents who have given the crews drinks as they have passed on their rounds. We encourage everyone to keep hydrated and this has helped out. Your kindness and consideration is greatly appreciated and your thoughtful actions have helped to make a tough job a little bit easier.
We will keep our 06:00 starts to collection rounds in place until further notice, as it helps the crews complete their rounds before the hottest part of the afternoon.

Pay a visit to our newest exhibition: Ingrid Pollard, Three Drops of Blood
This exhibition marks the first collaboration between talking on corners and THG, presenting renowned artist Ingrid Pollard to East Devon for the first time.
Ingrid Pollard is recognised as one of the most influential British artists, breaking new ground and forging pathways for younger generations, shaping Britain's understanding and histories of art, society and culture.
The exhibition includes photography, print, mixed media, text, found objects and an extensive project archive. It is the culmination of a two-year research project which has seen Pollard travel across Devon. Drawing on her interests in classification, systems of knowledge, leisure, trade and money, Pollard has honed in on botanical gardens, ferns and the unique historical collections of books at the Devon and Exeter Institution. Part of Pollard's research involved exploring the representation of botanicals in local lace making, including the renowned Honiton lace.
Until 29 October.

Annual Gas Safety Week next month
Tragic scenes at the fatal gas explosions in Birmingham and Kent reinforce the significance of Gas Safety Legislation we adhere to at EDDC, ensuring our properties and communities are safe and compliant.
EDDC work closely with our contractors at Liberty Gas to ensure that annual services are carried out, that carbon monoxide, smoke and heat detectors are installed and working, along with general reactive call outs.
Thank you to our residents who work diligently with us and our robust processes, it is vitally important that our contractors gain access to your property, to check gas safety. Next month from Monday 12 - Friday 16 September, EDDC will be holding our Annual Gas Safety Week. Providing valuable advice and reassurance on safety, simple home checks and this year, we will also be focusing on preparing your home for winter.
If you smell gas when in our district, please immediately call Wales & West Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
Monday was officially National Relaxation Day!
But it’s not too late: it’s always helpful to enjoy some downtime and take a break. Relax, take a deep breath, unwind – with music, a book, favourite TV, time out-of-doors; it can help us be more productive over the long term.
Lots of use feel guilty if we take time to do nothing, because it’s often viewed as lazy or unambitious. Nothing could be further from the truth. Relaxation is an integral part of our lives and can help us be more productive over the long term.
Minor Injuries Units – where they are and when to use them
With around 5 million people visiting Devon each summer, the NHS has worked hard to ensure there are additional services in some tourist hotspots to reduce pressure on our busy emergency departments.
Minor Injuries Units (MIU) and Urgent Treatment Centres (UTC) are located right across the county and are there for people needing urgent medical attention, but not in a life-threatening situation. You can find your nearest MIU or UTC and check their opening hours online.
Treatment starts at home for many conditions, but for more serious sprains, burns, wounds that need stitching and suspected broken limbs you may be treated more quickly in your nearest Minor Injuries Unit or Urgent Treatment Centre.
NHS England’s Clear on Cancer campaign
If a friend or family member has been coughing for three weeks or more, encourage them to contact their GP practice. It's probably nothing serious, but it could be a sign of cancer. Early diagnosis and treatment of cancer can save lives.
