East Devon District Council acquires land for Cranbrook Town Centre and gives green light to supermarket, shops and nursery

cranbrook town centre

East Devon District Council has approved funding of up to £5.5m for the acquisition of town centre land in Cranbrook, as well as approving three planning applications for a supermarket, high street shops with apartments above, a town square and a children’s day nursery – all bringing the 21st century town centre closer to a reality.

The £5.5m investment is funded by the Exeter and East Devon Enterprise Zone from borrowing against future ring-fenced business rate income. By securing this land, the Council can make sure that the new town centre will be able to grow and develop over time, including providing workspace to meet the needs of a growing population. This sits alongside current plans to provide space for shops and community facilities including a children’s centre, youth centre, library, town council offices, health and wellbeing hub, a leisure centre and a skatepark.

Work on the supermarket and nursery is due to be completed by summer next year, followed soon after by the high street shops, apartments, town square and children’s day nursery.

Ambitious proposals for a Clyst Valley Trail route between West Clyst and Topsham are the subject of a public consultation which launched on Monday (9 May).

East Devon District Council and Devon County Council are in the early stages of designing the multi-use route which will connect Exeter with nearby towns and villages in East Devon.

People have until Friday, 10 June to comment on the proposals by completing the online consultation survey.

As part of the consultation, a webinar will be held at 5:30pm on Wednesday, 18 May. Anyone interested in signing up to view the webinar should email transportplanning@devon.gov.uk by Tuesday, 17 May.

£150k newly renovated skate park in Budleigh Salterton vandalised with graffiti

graffiti

On Wednesday morning, the REACT team attended Budleigh Salterton skate park and other locations in Budleigh to remove a considerable amount of graffiti.

This took the team several hours to remove and the costs for chemicals alone came to £65.

Whilst removing the graffiti, the operatives were thanked by several local residents for EDDC’s prompt response to this criminal damage.

Graffiti is a criminal offence carrying large fines given out by a magistrate or up to a £80 fixed penalty notice issued by the council or by the police. If you see anyone doing graffiti please report it to us or the police.

Plastic Recycling – no plastic coat hangers!

coat hangers

We are getting a lot of plastic coat hangers in our recycling sacks.

Unfortunately we are unable to recycle these items from the kerb-side. Please do not put them into your recycling sack as they contaminate the plastic packaging we do recycle.

When clothes shopping, if you do not need the hanger, please leave it behind with the retailer, so they can return it to their supplier for re-use.

Check here to see what plastic items you can put in your recycling sack.

Thank you for recycling.
