Councillors back Exeter’s submission for local government reorganisation
Councillors have unanimously backed a submission which sets out the Council’s case for a new unitary authority which includes the city of Exeter.
The council will now submit its interim case for the creation of a new unitary authority incorporating the city of Exeter and adjacent areas after it gained cross-party support.
The submission recognises the urban and rural identity of Devon and highlights the need for up to four unitary authorities for the county.
This will capitalise on the region’s established strengths, drive economic and housing growth and deliver better services for communities and residents.
The city’s interim case recognises that Devon is a large geographical area with small, dispersed populations balanced by two major urban centres in Exeter and Plymouth.

 Still time to register
Still time to register to vote in Exeter’s May elections
There’s still time to register to vote in this year’s elections being held in Exeter.
People have until midnight on Friday 11 April to make sure they are on the electoral register.
Anyone not on the register cannot vote.
There will be elections for Devon County Council on Thursday 1 May. There will also be by-elections for two City Council wards – Mincinglake & Whipton and Topsham – following two City Councillors stepping down. These will also be held on 1 May.
Apart from the two by-elections, there are no other City Council elections this year, because the local authority holds its elections in ‘thirds’, meaning there are no elections every fourth year. It’s really simple to register, just go to the Gov.uk website at gov.uk/register-to-vote. Those who are unsure if they are already on the register can contact the City Council directly at electoral.services@exeter.gov.uk or by calling 01392 265141.
