New council homes and retrofitting provide a major boost to tenants

Building new Council homes and improving existing properties is essential for tenants in Exeter and helps the city to cut its carbon footprint.

That’s the message from Cllr Marina Asvachin, Exeter’s Lead Councillor for Housing.

Cllr Asvachin was speaking during a visit to Brook House, a new development of 21 new Passivhaus flats constructed on the site of a former car park located off Hamlin Gardens.

The first residents moved into the new homes last October, marking the latest chapter in the City Council’s construction programme to build new social housing in Exeter.

The homes have been constructed to certified Passivhaus standards, using a “fabric first” approach. This means the flats are highly energy efficient, with high levels of insulation and exceptional airtightness.

They are climate-resilient for the future, and their energy efficiency measures help tenants offset the rising cost of living through savings on energy bills, while also reducing carbon emissions.

Exeter running talent rewriting the record books

One of Europe’s brightest young runners is being put through her paces at an athletics track in Exeter.

Eighteen-year-old Innes Fitzgerald has set the athletics world on fire in recent weeks with some astonishing performances.

The Exeter Harrier is rewriting the record books with her fearless front-running. In February, Innes smashed the European under-20 indoor 3,000m record by an incredible ten seconds and in the process took 16 seconds off Zola Budd’s British indoor under-20 record.

Innes trains at the City Council-run Exeter Arena under the close guidance of coach Gavin Pavey, who runs the Isca Endurance squad. Gavin is no stranger to success, having guided his wife Jo to medals at the World, European and Commonwealth Games.

Elections

You will need voter ID to vote

Make sure you’re on the electoral register for 2025 elections

People in Exeter are being reminded that there will be no City Council elections in 2025 but there will be elections for Devon County Council.

Anyone who wants to vote in the Devon County Council elections on Thursday 1 May is being urged to make sure that they are on the electoral register.

To do this, people need to visit the Gov.uk website at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote. Those who are unsure if they are already on the register can contact the City Council directly at electoral.services@exeter.gov.uk or by calling 01392 265141.

People will also need to make sure they have appropriate photo ID if they are voting in person at a polling station. For a full list of accepted ID, visit the Gov.uk website at www.electoralcommission.org.uk/voting-and-elections/voter-id/accepted-forms-photo-id

Those who are unable or do not wish to vote at a polling station can opt for a postal vote. To do this, visit the Electoral Commission website at https://www.electoralcommission.org.uk/voting-and-elections/ways-vote/apply-vote-post

Although people will be going to the polls to elect Devon County Councillors, there will be no City Council elections this year. This is because the City Council elects its councillors in ‘thirds’, meaning there are no elections every fourth year.
