Leader Column: affordable and sustainable housing is a priority in Exeter

"I want to start by talking about Remembrance Sunday. I was very pleased and very proud that several members of the public have remarked about how much they enjoyed the service we held at the War Memorial in Northernhay Gardens.

The Salamanca band was fantastic and really, on such a sombre occasion, added a lot of cheer to the event and it made everyone who attended feel very proud.

A civic party also attended Exeter Cathedral for the Devon County service later in the afternoon and this was another very well organised and moving event.

The Devon district councils have commissioned a housing report which will form the basis of our strategic thinking in the county going forward. Here in Exeter, we still have a big challenge in order to meet the housing numbers that are not just required by government but are genuinely needed by people here in the city.

We need good affordable and sustainable housing and I am pleased that we are delivering this. We will be investing money in the long-awaited Laing’s Easiform project in the St Thomas area. This has been outstanding for a few years but I am pleased that we can now proceed with this scheme.

We also have Vaughan Road and the first phase is near completion, with the creation of 35 new Passivhaus homes for people in housing need."

Bart’s quayside shot wins Exeter tree photography competition

A stunning Autumn shot of golden trees lining Exeter’s quayside whilst a gull swoops low over the water has won Exeter City Council’s tree photography competition.

The image from Bart Sadecki wooed judges in the popular competition - which attracted a total of 87 entries – but it was a close run thing, with last year’s winner Oliver Necesito being pipped into second place by just one point!

The competition was held in the run up to National Tree Week (23 November to 1 December), with people being asked to capture their favourite tree in Exeter.

This was the fifth consecutive year that the City Council (ECC) has run the competition, teaming up again with its arboricultural contractors Devon Tree Services, who kindly offered up the prizes.

Bart wins a framed photograph of his picture, and the book ‘A Portrait of the Tree: A celebration of favourite trees from around Britain’, by Adrian Houston.
