Electronic gadgets and items are now an
essential part of our everyday lives.
Technology is changing and developing at a fast pace and as we all try
to keep up, we find ourselves left with electrical waste that we’re unsure what
to do with. For every 5.9kg of small
electricals purchased in 2012 (the average amount per person), only a fraction
of these items (1.8kg) were sent to be recycled. Recycling electrical items is important as
they may contain hazardous materials that could contaminate our soil and water
if they end up in landfill.

Can I recycle it?
It's easy to check if an electrical item, toy or game is
recyclable. Simply ask the following
questions and if the answer is yes (to any of these) - it is recyclable:
- Does it have a plug?
- Does it use batteries?
- Does it need charging?
- Does it have a picture of a crossed out wheelie
bin on it?
Items such as kitchen appliances, mobile phones, computers,
TV's, electrical and electronic tools can all be either recycled or reused.

Where can I recycle electrical items?
Before recycling, you need to make sure that you remove
personal information stored on gadgets or devices such as laptops, tablets,
smart phones, smart TVs or sat navs. The
government’s Information
Commissioner’s Office has a helpful guide on deleting personal data.
You can take electrical items to the household waste
recycling site at St Philip's Avenue, Eastbourne BN22 8NB. If you have a large electrical item such as a
fridge or freezer that you can’t take there yourself, you can use the council’s
bulky
waste service to collect it for you (there is a charge for bulky waste collections).
There are also recycling points across the town which accept
small electrical goods. You can find
your nearest recycling point on East
Sussex County Council’s website.
Often shops will collect your unwanted electricals when they
deliver your new one - especially larger items like TV's, fridges and freezers
(please note that retailers may charge to collect your old electricals).
|
 Re-use
If your electrical item is still in good working order, you
could donate it to a charity or organisation for re-use. Please remember to
remove any personal data from your gadget or device first!
Local charities that accept working electrical items
include:
Some organisations accept working computers and monitors
for refurbishment provided they meet certain standards:
