Welcome to our annual Mauchline CARS Christmas Newsletter

Hello Mauchline community, friends and family,

We are happy to share with you that 2023 has been an extremely productive year for Mauchline Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (CARS), we have managed to achieve some great milestones over the past 12 months.

Public Realm Phase 2 funding awarded

Following the success of our 2022 Place Based Investment Programme(PBIP) application, Mauchline CARS again submitted an application for match funding to support our second phase of improvement works for Mauchline's street lighting.

We aim to complete our second phase of improvements across the Loudoun Street car park with a full replacement of the current lighting with traditional styled teardrop lamp posts.

Mauchline CARS appointed new Conservation Accredited Architect

We welcomed our new Conservation Accredited Architect to Mauchline CARS at the start of 2023.

Stephen Kerr, Senior Partner at Wylie Shanks Architects successfully gained Conservation Accreditation following a successful application to the Royal Incorporation of Architects for Scotland (RIAS).

Article 4 and Removal of Deemed Advertisement Consent adopted

Further progress was achieved within Mauchline Conservation Area with the adoption of both Article 4 and Removal of Deemed Advertisement Consent.

The removal of these areas of "Permitted Development" will ensure further protection and enhancement to our historic environment and safeguarding the improvement works being carried out by Mauchline CARS.

With the approval of this it means that several types of development or advertisements will now require permission from the council which previously did not.

During the spring of 2023 we accomplished an important milestone with the submission of our first batch of Planning Applications, as well as any other required consents.

These applications were compiled with thanks to Wylie Shanks Architects our Conservation Accredited Architects via instruction of Mauchline CARS grant applicants.

Since then these applicants have continued to progress through the grant funding scheme, with other applicants following their path.

Across September we hosted our 2023 Traditional Building Skills Training Programme, consisting of four courses hosted in and around Mauchline.

All the courses were supported by our partners at The Scottish Lime Centre Trust, and we'd like to thank all involved and all those who took part.

Mauchline's Parkour Summer School

Working with professional dance artists, Louise Chudleigh and Carrie Craggs and expert Parkour tutor, Scott Houston, participants created a repertoire which was carried out at iconic locations across Mauchline.

The young people worked with digital specialists Prancing Jack Productions to capture footage on a journey around the village showcasing the wonderful heritage we have in our own town.

"Out of This World"- Mauchline CARS funded Heritage Awareness Course

In collaboration with East Ayrshire Council’s Creative Minds Team to deliver a Heritage Awareness Course, "Out of This World".

“Out of This World” is based on existing artefacts displayed in local museums, namely Burns House Museum.

During the spring of 2023 we met with the cohort of Young People from Robert Burns Academy who are producing our Mauchline Town App.

Mauchline street furniture improvements

In preparation for the Holy Fair this year we completed a small improvement to our public realm with thanks to East Ayrshire Council's Greener Communities Team.

The Greener Communities Team have completed improvement works to all railings and bollards across the A76 portion of the Conservation Area. We think they look great, what do you think?

In 2022 we were successful in gaining additional funding from The Place Based Based Investment Programme (PBIP), as part of a joint application with Mauchline Community Council to support their bench improvements project in and around our village.

We would like to thank the Mauchline Community Council and all involved with these continued improvements.

Following some great progress we have unfortunately still experienced some delays out with our control.

As a result of this we approached both our funders Historic Environment Scotland (HES) and East Ayrshire Council, and are happy to share with you that we have received confirmation that we have been approved a year long extension, meaning Mauchline CARS will now complete on March 2026.

At this time we thank both Historic Environment Scotland and East Ayrshire Council for their ongoing support in the success of Mauchline CARS. We would also like to thank the ongoing support and understanding of our community, partners and friends.
