We are happy to share with you the recent completion of our 2023 Traditional Building Skills Training Programme,which saw us hosting Traditional Building Skills Courses in and around the village during September.
All the courses were supported by our partners at The Scottish Lime Centre Trust, and we'd like to thank all involved and all those who took part. Read on to find out more about how our training days went.

On Monday 4 September 2023, we held our first week long training course for Traditional Rubble Wall Building and Re-Pointing. It was hosted at Dumfries House.
The course was delivered by our training partner the Scottish Lime Centre Trust under the supervision of their Stonemason and Principal Trainer - Stan Stenhouse.
During this busy week attendees learned how to build solid, freestanding walls, using local sandstone, all bedded and pointed up using traditional lime mortars.

We hosted our second traditional training course, for Traditional Scottish Slate Roofing, on Tuesday 12 September 2023. This was held at Burn's House Museum, Mauchline.
Attendees were given an introductory guide to traditional Scottish roofs including function, structure, external roof shapes, typical details and decorative features, the causes of deterioration and the main causes of failure.
Practical work included:
- sizing and trimming slates
- setting out and nailing a simple traditional slate roof
- undertaking repairs

Our third training course, Traditional Joinery for Windows and Doors, was held on Wednesday 20 September 2023 at Mauchline and District Kilmarnock Supporters Club, Mauchline.
The course focused upon common repairs for sash and case windows and tips to avoid deterioration, including a short history of the development of windows before looking at the different components that make up a window, and the issues to consider when approaching repairs.
Topics covered included:
- window dismantling and reassembly
- replacing ropes
- weights
- panes and putty

Our fourth and final training course for this year, in Traditional Signwriting, was held on Wednesday 27 September 2023, at Mauchline Parish Church Hall.
This course was inspired by signage and lettering of historic frontages, including ghost signs. Attendees learned all about the history of sign painting and the main brush strokes used in signwriting. Along with some useful tips and recommendations from our specialist, Ross Hastie of Ross Hastie Signs, including reference books and tools and supplies.
At the end of the workshop, each attendee got to take home their own hand-painted sign!
