Meet Ann ...

Hi,

I’m Ann McArthur and I'm the ASP Lead for NHS Ayrshire and Arran.

Although I'm not living there just now, I was born and raised in East Ayrshire as were my parents and grandparents.

I went to high school in Stewarton and my first 'job' was in Kilmarnock before I headed off to study nursing.

Cracker

In the early part of my career I was interested in forensic psychiatry but looking back I think this was because of the 1993 TV programme Cracker.

never imagined I would end up doing my current role and even now I sometimes wonder at the big decisions that led me here. I am grateful for the opportunities that I've had and I have worked with some amazing and inspirational people.

Exciting time

Right now is an exciting time for Public Protection in NHS A&A because we are about to launch a dedicated ASP service for staff across the whole organisation, no matter where people work or what they do.

As a public body it is imperative we support our staff to fulfil the duty of co-operation under the ASP Act. To do this well we want to engage with staff to find out from them what would help, so we have started this engagement with a survey. The results will help us to design specific training or awareness sessions on ASP related topics that link with unique health care professional roles

NHS Advice and Support Line

We also are planning for a new advice and support line. This dedicated telephone service will mean that staff can phone and speak with an advisor to talk through any ASP related matter - this might be about a concern they have, or a query about ASP processes - whatever the call is about we will endeavour to provide expert and professional advice and support.

Once the new telephone service is live (early autumn), we will promote this through our usual communication channels including Daily Digest.

These developments are designed to support the NHS workforce grow in confidence and competence in ASP processes, to increase collaboration and, jointly with partners, reduce risk and increase support and protection of adults at risk of harm.

...and introducing Fraser

Hi,

My name is Fraser Spence, I am a Detective Inspector in Police Scotland and currently manage the Risk and Concern Hub within Ayrshire Division based at Kilmarnock Police Office.

The Hub has an integral role in supporting frontline police officers and partner agencies in dealing with Adults at Risk and Child Protection matters throughout Ayrshire.

Policing Background

I have 26 years Police experience from a variety of roles throughout the West of Scotland including local policing, in both Glasgow and Ayrshire, Cybercrime and Major Crime Investigation.

In this time I have seen the work of the police and the challenges we all face change considerably, but the diversity and demands keep me motivated as I navigate through my career.

I am new to the Public Protection environment and very much enjoying my new role in Ayrshire working with my partner agency colleagues across the three Ayrshire regions.

Relaxation…

With three children and a role as a youth football coach I don’t get much time to relax away from work, but when I do, keeping fit, or at least trying to and the occasional round of golf helps me to unwind. My sons both play football and I love to watch their games, whilst my daughter enjoys both swimming and gymnastics. Life is busy, but I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Fraser

Scottish National Missing Persons Framework Project has been working with Scottish Government since July 2019 to deliver a programme of support to professionals working with missing adults and children, in accordance with the National Missing Persons Framework.

East Ayrshire submitted a bid to be involved in this work during 2023 – 2024, the successful applicants will be informed within the first few weeks in June 2023.

If the bid is successful, the Missing People Project will support us to identify gaps within the Health and Social Care Partnership local procedures and processes when dealing with missing persons and their families.

Should we be unsuccessful in our bid, Marranne Heron, Service Manager will lead a group of staff from all relevant East Ayrshire Council services to identify gaps within our processes and hopefully, locally we can ensure all aspects of the National Framework is being implemented across all sectors.

East Ayrshire Adult Protection Committee

East Ayrshire Adult Protection Committee Improvement Plan

The East Ayrshire Adult Protection Committee Improvement Plan 1 January 2023 – 31 December 2024 was ratified by EAAPC in February 2023.

The Improvement Sub Group of the Adult Protection Committee have responsibility for taking forward this Plan which identifies key areas we want to develop and improve over the next year including for example development of this newsletter to improve communication between the Adult Protection Committee and frontline staff, undertaking deep dive audits to better understand trends, including self-neglect & hoarding. Scottish Fire and Rescue also have a safe space initiative which we will evaluate to understand how effective it has been in keeping people safe from harm. We are also committed to gathering service user experience (real time feedback) and the impact that adult support and protection has had.

Analysis

Emma Guthrie, Practice Development Co-ordinator with the Protection & Learning Team presented the Committee with an analysis of Initial and Significant Case Review activity within East Ayrshire from April 2019 – March 2022.

Alongside this, Emma provided an overview of the Care Inspectorate’s National Triennial Review of Initial Case Reviews and Significant Case Reviews for adults 2019 – 2022 (ensure in presentation view to hear audio) and undertook interactive discussions with Committee members around four key themes identified from the local analysis, which included:

Neglect and Self-Neglect
Information Sharing
Record Keeping and Communication
Multi-Disciplinary Working and Professional Curiosity and Planning
Contingency Planning and Legal Literacy

The purpose of these discussions was to identify “next steps” as we move from ICR/SCR to Learning Reviews. The information gathered at this interactive discussion will be shared with Committee in August 2023.

And finally...

A big SHOUT OUT to Andrena!

We wish to thank Andrena McPike, Graduate Intern for E-Learning within the Protection & Learning Team.

Andrena joined the HSCP nine months ago and has been instrumental in the development and design of the E-Learning Module: Making Protection Personal and is currently re-vamping the ASP Level 1 E-Learning Module.

Andrena was instrumental in the development of the Powerpoint presentation on Learning Reviews (23.39mgb) which was discussed at our recent Committee.

This presentation, alongside others Andrena has completed, reflects the different ways we can impart information. Andrena will be instrumental in assisting the Protection Team to showcase their digital progress at the No Wrong Door Conference on 6 September 2023.

Andrena has also become a member of the Short Life Working Group who are developing an ASP App for practitioners to access when out and about undertaking their ASP roles.

Great achievements

Andrena has been involved in the development of an animated video of the Learning and Development Team to introduce them and the work they have completed.

In addition, Andrena has developed her own skills around PowerPoint and supported the Protection and Learning team to understand what else can be achieved. This learning has been shared throughout the team.

Andrena has excelled in using Canva, a graphic design platform to support the workforce through developing workbooks and other handouts for development sessions.

She has also been involved in developing and collating the findings from Smart surveys and also supported the recent Corporate Parenting event.

Granicus Bulletins for the Learning and Development team to share with practitioners to know what development sessions are coming up over the next quarter have also fallen under Andrena’s remit.

All of the work Andrena has accomplished aligns to one of the strategic priorities.
