Director's Welcome
Hello and welcome to our February issue of The Tea Break!
We’ve had yet another busy month and have plenty of great news stories, updates and events to share with you this issue.
Our Local Conversations events were a huge success, with HSCP staff, partner organisations, independent groups and members of the local community coming along to our three events in Kilmarnock, Cumnock and Galston. Each event was a brilliant opportunity to engage with people across East Ayrshire and to hear their views on health and care services that they and their loved ones regularly make use of.
We have listened to every comment and suggestion and will now use them to develop our services to make them even better for those who depend on them. A special thanks to Lorna McIlreavy and her steering group for all their work in shaping and planning these events.
This month was also a period of great achievement in the partnership, with our Analogue to Digital Team winning the Bronze Digital Telecare Implementation Award from Digital Telecare for Scottish Local Government. This is a terrific achievement and a testament to the exceptional work put in by all members of the team.
I’d like to congratulate our Social Care Learning Hub and HEART teams for reaching the finals of the iESE Public Sector Transformation Awards. I look forward to attending the awards ceremony next month to celebrate the exceptional work of both teams. Good luck!
We also saw a number of awareness days, anniversaries and campaigns, with Care Day and Adult Support and Protection Day taking place this month.
During ASP Day we raised awareness of the signs of self-neglect, highlighted the #SeenSomethingSaySomething campaign and encouraged everyone to contact our Adult Support and Protection Team if they are concerned about someone.
NHS Ayrshire and Arran celebrated the first anniversary of its Covid-19 Therapeutic Service and we celebrated the third anniversary of The Promise, where we renewed our commitment to supporting care-experienced young people in East Ayrshire.
We’ve all these stories and lots more…
As we head towards spring, with longer days and finally some heat in the sun, so too do we see fresh hope and opportunity in all that we do.
Take care and enjoy the issue!
Craig McArthur
Director of East Ayrshire Health and
Social Care Partnership
Local Conversations get everyone talking
Our Local Conversations events have now finished for 2023 - and what a success they were!
Third sector organisations, partnership staff and members of the public all came together to share their views on health and care services, with fantastic events in Kilmarnock, Cumnock and Galston.
Thank you to everyone who came along!
East Ayrshire wins Digital Telecare Award
Our Analogue to Digital team recently received an award from Digital Telecare for Scottish Local Government – an amazing achievement and a milestone step in delivering technology enabled care (TEC) in East Ayrshire.
The Bronze Digital Telecare Implementation Award recognises the progress we have made in our analogue to digital transition project and sets the foundations upon which the future of the project will rest.
East Ayrshire celebrates Care Day 2023
On Friday 17 February we celebrated National Care Day 2023, with a renewal of our commitment to care-experienced children and young people in East Ayrshire.
We also gathered stories from our Children and Young People's Services, who have been working hard to support, encourage and empower our care-experienced community in every way possible.
Three years of keeping the Promise
This month saw the three-year anniversary of The Promise and a renewal of our commitment to care-experienced children and young people in East Ayrshire.
Over the past three years we’ve created new opportunities for care-experienced children and young people to engage with us and let us know what really matters to them.
Our plan is to continue this work and maintain a supportive and empowering relationship with our children and young people, to remind them they are valued and respected and that every one of them is capable of great things.
Nursing team praised for compassionate care
We recently received some lovely feedback from a local GP for our Cumnock District Nursing Team, following the compassionate care they provided to a “complex palliative patient”.
Dr. T. Fernandez praised the team for their strength and support in what was an incredibly emotional situation:
“I would like to tell you how magnificent the District Nursing Team, both in hour and out of hours, have been in managing a complex palliative patient in the community.
"She was 30 years old when she died. The patient’s wish was to stay at home and, through very difficult circumstances, this was achieved. It was very emotional for all involved.
"The Cumnock District Nurses are a truly exceptional team.”
Well done to all staff in the Cumnock District Nursing Team for your kindness and humanity towards this patient, for ensuring that her wishes were respected and that her care was truly person-centred.
Adult Support and Protection Day raises awareness of self-neglect
On Monday 20 February we marked Adult Support and Protection Day by raising awareness of the signs of self-neglect.
We are also joining Adult Support and Protection committees in Scotland who are calling for greater awareness of adults more at risk of harm as a result of the cost of living crisis.
Two EAHSCP teams make iESE Awards finals
Congratulations are in order for two EAHSCP teams, who are finalists in this year’s iESE Public Sector Transformation Awards!
Our Social Care Learning Hub and HEART (Helping Everyone At The Right Time) teams applied for the People, Value and Culture and the Customer Focus awards respectively.
The award ceremony will take place on Wednesday 8 March, with senior management staff Sina Currie, Charles Rocks and Craig Ross in attendance, as well as our director, Craig McArthur.
Best of luck to both teams!
Covid-19 Therapeutic Service celebrates first anniversary
NHS Ayrshire and Arran’s Covid-19 Therapeutic Service recently celebrated its first anniversary!
The service, which first opened on 21 December 2021, provides treatment to people who are thought to be at high risk of a clinical condition if they develop Covid-19 symptoms and test positive for the virus.
Staff and clinicians who have supported the service over the past year came together to share their experience and the benefits of this potentially life-saving treatment.
Join the Kiltwalk for Break the Silence
East Ayrshire charity Break the Silence is looking for keen walkers to help them raise vital funds in this year's Kiltwalk event.
The hugely popular Kiltwalk events see thousands of walkers take to the streets of Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee every year, with many donning kilts and tartan to raise money for their chosen charities.
This year's Glasgow event will take place on Sunday 30 April, with a choice of three routes.
Farewell Christine!
After 39 years of service, Christine Lamont has decided it’s time for a well earned break!
Christine has worked in various social work offices, latterly within Locality Health and Care Services at The Johnnie Walker Bond, Kilmarnock.
She has made many good friends over the years and plans to spend her retirement meeting up with friends for a cuppa and cake.
Enjoy your retirement Christine, from all your social work colleagues and from everyone at EAHSCP!
Senior Charge Nurse nominated for award
Mary McKenna, Senior Charge Nurse of Burnock Ward at East Ayrshire Community Hospital, has been nominated for a Greatix Award for her commitment to quality improvement and falls prevention/reduction.
The Greatix initiative allows NHS staff to thank each other for outstanding work and dedication and to make them feel valued and appreciated.
Congratulations Mary on your nomination!
Will you stub it out for No Smoking Day?
As we approach National No Smoking Day on Wednesday 8 March, NHS Scotland's Quit Your Way service is urging people to get in touch and go smoke-free in 2023.
The service can provide a wide range of support, offering support and advice, talking through your options and working with you to create a realistic and manageable plan to help you quit for good.
