Reminder: We want your views on introducing a Minimum Learning Period

There’s still time to respond to Department for Transport’s (DfT) consultation on introducing a 3 or 6 month Minimum Learning Period (MLP) for learner drivers.  

The consultation is part of DfT’s Road Safety Strategy which was published on 7 January 2026. 

As part of the government’s Road Safety Strategy, the Department for Transport (DfT) is consulting on introducing a 3 or 6 month Minimum Learning Period (MLP) for learner drivers. This will include introducing: 

What’s being consulting on

The consultation focuses on: 

  • a minimum amount of time to be spent learning and a minimum number of learning hours 
  • a mandated learning syllabus

The consultation will close at 11:59pm on 11 May 2026. We encourage all driving instructors, and anyone with an interest in learning to drive to take part.
