We'd like to provide you with a reminder of the requirements for roller brake testing software.
We previously wrote to you in January 2024 about the need to update your roller brake testing software. We would like to remind you that the extended deadline to do this by is 31 December 2025.
The updates to roller brake testers incorporate legislation changes, and improve usability and functionality to remove the need for manual work arounds.
They also include additional information on the overall performance of the brake test.
These changes are not to be confused with the regular DTP number database updates which occur twice a year.
What you need to do
To maintain the standards expected across the industry, you will need to upgrade your roller brake testing software by 31 December 2025.
A large proportion of ATFs have already had the updates carried out and are taking advantage of the benefits.
ATFs who still have to upgrade their equipment should talk to their equipment supplier at the earliest opportunity to give themselves time to plan these upgrades.
Most roller brake testers will be able to be upgraded at the same time as their regular calibration visit.
Why are these upgrades important
These upgrades allow for key annual test and road safety improvements which include:
- updates to service brake efficiencies, including draw bar trailers
- changes in how we measure secondary brake performance
- key programme changes to prevent tyre damage
- improved work flows to aid consistency of brake testing at test and preventative inspection
- the inclusion of advisory items, to better support wider preventative maintenance of vehicles/trailers and road safety
