We'd like to provide you with an update on the requirements for roller brake testing software.
To maintain the standards expected across the industry, we'd encourage you to upgrade your roller brake testing software as soon as possible.
However, we understand some equipment will require a higher level of investment to upgrade as you may need hardware changes, alongside the software update.
Giving ATFs time to plan
To allow you to factor these costs into your business plan more effectively, we will be extending the deadline that you need to do this software update by 31 December 2025.
Buying new equipment
From 1 April 2024, if you need to buy a new roller brake tester because your current equipment has broken, your new roller brake tester must meet the new specification. The 1 April 2024 deadline only applies to anyone who needs to buy a new roller brake tester.
New ATF applicants who have not received “approval in principle” by 1 April 2024 will also be required have an roller brake tester installed to the new specification.
These upgrades allow for key annual test and road safety improvements which include:
- updates to service brake efficiencies, including draw bar trailers
- changes in how we measure secondary brake performance
- key programme changes to prevent tyre damage
- improved work flows to aid consistency of brake testing at test and preventative inspection
- the inclusion of advisory items, to better support wider preventative maintenance of vehicles/trailers and road safety
Thank you for your continued cooperation.
