DVSA extends access to vehicle recalls data

DVSA is improving the timeliness and availability of vehicle recalls information.

Current Position

Vehicle recalls information is currently supplied to DVSA by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). This information is made available through GOV.UK

Whilst accurate, this is supplied monthly and may not be the latest information from the manufacturer when accessed by the motorist.

Going Forward

DVSA is working with vehicle manufacturers on supplying more regular recalls information direct to DVSA.

The first of these are now supplying daily recalls data. This will appear on:

  • The MOT Testing Service – a new prompt screen in MTS to inform testers there is an outstanding recall.
  • The MOT certificate – any outstanding recall at the time of the MOT test will be added to the MOT certificate.
  • Check the MOT history of a vehicle (online) – the service will include a prompt when a vehicle registration has an outstanding recall.
  • MOT reminders via text from 16th August – subscribers will now receive a prompt if their vehicle has an outstanding recall when they receive their MOT reminder.

Recalls information from manufacturers that are not yet supplying data direct to DVSA will continue to be updated by SMMT. The information will also be available in the above services.

Who’s taking part

Manufacturers that have agreed to provide the real time data for digital MOT services cover 47% of the vehicles with an outstanding recall. They include:

  • Toyota
  • Ford
  • Honda
  • MAN Trucks
  • MV Agusta
  • Hymer
  • Volkwagen Group
  • Mercedes-Benz Cars and Vans

We will let you know as further manufacturers join the scheme.

Sharing recalls information with your customers

The recalls information provided through MTS and on MOT certificates will benefit motorists.

By sharing this information with vehicle owners, you can help inform them about outstanding safety recalls and how to get them fixed.

As more manufacturers provide recalls data direct to DVSA, we’ll begin raising awareness of the improved information they have access to.
