Understanding your driving test result

New guidance to help ADIs carry out more realistic mock driving tests.

We’ve published a new guide about how to carry out realistic mock driving tests.

It follows research we've done with ADIs and learner drivers.

The research with ADIs shows that 89% agree that mock tests need to be more realistic.

The research with learner drivers who have failed their driving test shows that 1 in 5 think the main reason they failed is that they were marked too harshly. And about 1 in 10 say they failed because they were too nervous.

So it's clear that we need to do more to help ADIs make their mock tests realistic, help learner drivers understand the standard that's needed to pass, and help to reduce their nerves by making sure they know what to expect.

Include mock test training in your sessions with trainee instructors and ADIs

We're encouraging you to include how to carry out mock driving tests with the trainee driving instructors and ADIs you train.

We believe that ADIs are best placed to deliver mock tests through their training and experience of sitting in on real driving tests with their pupils.

Their experience can be invaluable to pupils in helping them both pass first time and helping them through a lifetime of safe driving.

As an ORDIT trainer, you’re in the unique position to help us make mock tests more realistic by making sure the guidance is followed - from day one in PDI developmental training, through to ADIs lessons with their pupils.

What you can do

The guidance includes:

  • the benefits of mock tests
  • when to use mock tests
  • designing mock test routes
  • wording and instructions to use
  • assessing and marking faults
  • a driving test marking sheet

Read the guide about carrying out mock driving tests.

Graham O’Brien, Assistant Chief Driving Examiner, has blogged about why we’ve created the guide and how you can use it.

He also explains how you can sign up to attend a DVSA webinar about mock tests.
