MOT annual training: getting ready for this year’s assessment

Annual training and assessment for MOT testers is an important part of ensuring high quality testing and improving road and vehicle safety.

We know that over the last few months garages and testers have been busy and we hope our campaigns to help you promote your garage have helped you refocus customers away from these times.

MOT testers will need to complete their training and assessment by Thursday 31 March 2022 to avoid being suspended from testing.

The training can be carried out individually or with a training provider and the assessment result will be recorded automatically, via the MOT testing service as long as your date of birth and user id have been recorded correctly and match the details held on the MOT Testing Service.

Testers should do this in plenty of time before the deadline and not leave it until the last minute.

What do testers need to study?

The topics testers need to study depend on which vehicles are tested and are changed every year.

For Group A (class 1 and 2 vehicles), the topics are:

For Group B (class 3, 4, 5 and 7 vehicles), the topics are:

Those who test vehicles in Groups A and B need to study all the topics and train for at least 6 hours a year (instead of 3) and take 2 annual assessments.

Improving our service to you

We are improving the MOT testing service making the annual assessment easier to manage.

The first of these improvements shows whether you have passed or failed your MOT training and assessment as well as the score you achieved. We have included this change following feedback from testers that they don’t always know what the pass mark was for that year. Your previous results will now be shown as follows:

Regular reminders

We’ll be sending our regular reminders to MOT sites and testers directly over the next few months about various aspects of the training and assessment process.

Thank you

We want to take this opportunity to thank you again for everything you’ve been doing to help keep Britain’s vehicles safe to drive.
