Rules about filming and recording

You must have DVSA’s permission to use any device to film or record on DVSA premises.

However, you can use an outward-facing camera fitted to a vehicle when the test starts or ends in a DVSA car park.

A camera fitted to a test vehicle must:

  • face outside the vehicle and not film inside it
  • not record audio inside the vehicle

The driving examiner won’t start the test if they know it’s being filmed or recorded inside the vehicle.

Dealing with personal data

Video and audio recordings may be classed as personal data by the Data Protection Act 1998. There are strict rules about what you can do with this.

Get permission before filming

We’ve been made aware of filmed content containing personal information that has been posted on social media by ADIs without permission of either DVSA or the identified individuals.

The DVSA Registrar will contact those ADIs concerned to ask them to remove this from the public domain.

Read our policy about filming or recording driving tests.
