D-Day 80
White Cliffs Country will be honouring the brave personnel who risked their lives for freedom and peace in the Allied invasion of Normandy on 6 June 1944, 80 years ago. Our district played a surprising and fascinating role in Operation Fortitude South, which was crucial to the success of D-Day - read about it on our blog (click the link below). Commemorative events will take place at the Marina Curve in Dover, on Sandwich Quay, at St Margaret’s Bay and at the Battle of Britain Memorial and Capel-le-Ferne.

Best fish & chips
The British Government safeguarded the supply of fish and potatoes in wartime to keep up the nation's morale, so this year National Fish and Chip Day is on 6 June to coincide with D-Day 80 in recognition of the humble national dish’s importance. If you’re out and about in White Cliffs Country, why not treat yourself to this traditional take-away while you enjoy the D-Day entertainment (see above).
Much-loved local fishmonger, Jenkins & Son, is due to open its new premises in Deal on 25 June where, as well as selling the local catch, they’ll be launching their new Seafood Street Food menu (eat in or takeaway).
