Budget Update 2026/27

Today Full Council has passed next year’s budget which includes a 2 per cent increase in Council Tax (this is the social care precept only) and a phased approach to pay restoration for council staff.

An estimated £549.3m of capital investment is planned which includes ring-fenced grant funding to support long term sustainability of key transformational projects over four years, with £248.2m in 2026/27.

The budget also includes a council house rent increase of 4.8%,in line with the government’s policy on rents for social housing which equates to an average weekly rent increase of £4.39. This rent increase will meet the inflationary pressures and ensure St Leger Homes provide homes of a decent standard.

The Corporate Plan was also presented. The plan, approved by Full Council, details priorities for the following year, and how these contribute to the longer-term City Borough Strategy.

Watch out for further details in coming days on how the council is funded and what your council tax is spent on.
