Major Junction to Be Fully Signalised, As Part of Ongoing Safety Works to A19

Starting this month— and lasting for approximately eight weeks — our teams will soon begin installing a new traffic light system at the junction linking the A19 and the B1220 (Askern Road). Once this project is completed, the intersection will be fully signalised; reducing the risk of collisions and allowing for safer movement between two busy highways.

This is just the latest in a series of measures being introduced to make the A19 carriageway safer for all road users. Other proactive steps that have been taken so far include:

  • Extensive resurfacing works
  • Enhancements to road markings
  • The addition of new and upgraded pedestrian crossings
  • Several speed limit changes
  • The Introduction of LED variable message signs to communicate traffic management updates and key safety alerts to motorists.
  • Numerous junctions being signalised

Speaking about all of this, Councillor Glyn Jones, Deputy Mayor and Cabinet Member for Environment, Housing and Safer Communities at City of Doncaster Council, said: “As members of the South Yorkshire Safer Roads partnership, ensuring that all of our highways are as safe as they can possibly be — and minimising the number of serious injuries that occur on them — is an absolute top priority for us. Indeed, we are constantly looking for ways to reduce collisions on Doncaster’s roads, whether that’s by introducing new traffic calming measures, lowering speed limits in key areas, or reviewing the state of the infrastructure itself.

“Given that it’s such a significant part of our city’s network, spanning 14 kilometres, the A19 is obviously a big area of focus for these efforts and so it’s great to see all of the improvements that are being made lately to bolster its safety conditions. It’s a very important project, that could reduce serious injuries on the carriageways over the coming years, and so we’d like to thank road users for their continued patience as we do the necessary work to deliver it."

The A19 safety improvements works are being carried out by City of Doncaster Council until March 2027 and have been made possible by the Department for Transport's Safer Roads Fund.

Interactive Road Safety Event To Be Held At Doncaster College

As part of national Road Safety Week, various partners from across the region will soon be coming together for an interactive, day-long event at Doncaster College. Here, they will be raising awareness of how you can keep yourself — as well as those around you — safe while using our highways.

Throughout National Road Safety Week (16-22 November), various partners from across the region will soon be coming together for an interactive, day-long event at Doncaster College. Here, they will be raising awareness of how you can keep yourself — as well as those around you — safe while using our highways.

Throughout the exhibition, members of the South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership  will be on hand to interact with young cyclists, motorists and pedestrians alike. Among other things, there will be a practical demonstration of how the Fire and Rescue service extract people from the scene of collisions, the council's dedicated teams will explain how they look after local highways and educate people on the subject of Saf, and public health will demonstrate the dangers of drink driving using their beer googles device.

The Road Safety event will take place on Wednesday 19 November at Doncaster College.

New and Improved Footbridge Reopens

Following extensive restoration works, a popular footbridge in Mill Lane, Harlington is now fit for public use once again.

Providing convenient passage across the River Dearne and allowing pedestrians to move more easily between the communities of Harlington and Mexborough, this walkway has been a very in-demand route for locals in the past. However — following an arson incident that caused damage to its supports, deck boards and parapet — the bridge went out of commission in December of last year.

We're pleased to announce that, as a result of this team effort, the new-and-improved footbridge has now reopened for the public, benefitting from sturdier materials and a completely overhauled design. We'd like to thank everyone for their patience as we've done what needed to be done to get this key piece of infrastructure back in tip-top shape and safer than ever before.

Civic Quarter Multistorey Car Park Maintenance

Starting next week, essential maintenance will be taking place at the civic quarter multistorey car park. The number of available spaces here will be reduced on Tuesday 14 October and Wednesday 15 October — as works are carried out on the upper floors of the building — while the entire site will be closed on the Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

On these dates, residents and visitors to the city centre will need to find alternative parking. A breakdown of the available sites can be found on our website via the link below. We thank you for your patience while this necessary maintenance is conducted.
