Work to regenerate Doncaster city centre continues!

When visiting the city centre, be sure to venture to the Waterdale area to see the work that has been done on the walkway.

This one-year project, funded by UK Government, has seen the old central library removed to create a temporary open space, which now features a fresher and greener look. Trees, shrubs and new grass have been planted as well as 618 square meters of new turf on the site of the old library. The site also now features a birdhouse and three insect hotels!

When visiting, don't forget to check out the local businesses within the area and we thank them for their patience during this project.

Mayor Ros Jones will present a full 25-year city centre strategy to cabinet next week, which will look to implement an immediate 12-month action plan to continue work on the city centre's most important areas.

The strategy, which will outline a vision for the city centre until 2050, has been drafted up following an extensive consultation process. The council has worked with residents and businesses, as well as Team Doncaster partners and stakeholders across the city to hear their views on the strengths of our city centre, what needs improvement, and what the future could look like for Doncaster city centre

Work begins to prepare Doncaster Waterfront for future development

Work has begun to transform an area of Doncaster City Centre into an open space ready to be used for future development.

The Doncaster Waterfront (East) remediation project – part-funded by UK Government funding and through gainshare funding from South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority - will see the land cleaned up for future development schemes, with potential investment estimated at up to £400m.

Investment in Staff and Technology

The Council’s Street Scene team have recently recruited to some vacancies as we continue to resource the cleaner, greener function of the city centre.

We have undertaken joint operations in conjunction with Enforcement colleagues to tackle fly-tipping by residents and/or businesses early in the morning.

We are also determined to keep up to date with the latest technologies and are expected a fresh batch of solar powered compacter bins any time now. We have also trialled various hi-tech sweeping equipment as we look to make the city a cleaner environment.

Transforming Spaces and Walkways

We were delighted with the successful renovation of the Hall Gate to Wood Street Alleyway, turning it from an uninviting space into a vibrant and engaging public art installation.

This community-driven initiative sought to enhance the city’s cultural landscape while improving safety and accessibility in the area.

The alleyway, once known for anti-social behaviour and a lack of appeal, has been reimagined into a creative passageway designed to engage and inspire pedestrians. The project, developed in collaboration with Higher Rhythm recording studio and artist Jamie Bubb, integrates art and storytelling to celebrate Doncaster’s rich musical heritage.
