Recycling and Waste Update: October 2024

Welcome to your October update for all things recycling and waste in Doncaster!

Household Waste Recycling Centres move to winter hours

Don't forget that from this week, winter opening times will be in place at five of our 6 Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs).

As in previous years, our sites at Balby, Carcroft, Conisbrough, Hatfield & Rossington will revert to 9:30am - 5pm opening hours until the end of March 2025.

Armthorpe (8:30am - 7pm) remains unchanged.

Don't put batteries in your black bin!

A reminder that we cannot collect batteries or vapes, as they can cause fires.

Last month, a SuezUK waste crew were alert in spotting smoke and a flame from the rear of their refuse vehicle. It is thought that this was caused by a lithium battery which sparked up and went out.

Around one tonne of waste had to be ejected immediately and South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue had to attend. Luckily, there were no injuries or damage to the vehicle.

Please ensure you recycle your batteries, and hidden batteries in electric toothbrushes and vapes, correctly at our Household Waste Recycling Centres.

Solar Powered Bins are so hot right now

We've 'bin' meaning to mention this for a while now, but has anyone noticed these when they've been out and about?

These bins are new and solar powered, they not only compact the waste inside to increase capacity but also keep track of how full they are and let us know when they need emptying.

(And yes, they do still work at night)
