Brian Blessed Unveils Blue Plaque in Mexborough

Brian Blessed returned to Mexborough on Friday 27 October to unveil a new addition to the Blue Plaque Trail.

The new blue plaque is located outside of Pettit’s shoe shop in Mexborough and is dedicated to Henry (Harry) Dobson who founded and ran the Mexborough Theatre Guild, which produced such actors like Keith Barron and Brian Blessed.

Blessed was interviewed in 30Mexborough by Stewart Nicholson from Rotherham Radio and Brian drew quite the crowd for the unveiling of the plaque. He also appeared at the Empress Building for an intimate night of entertainment like no other!

People queued right down to the duel carriageway as they waited to enter the building and enjoy and evening of anecdotes and humour from the larger than life figure that is, none other than Brian Blessed.

Halloween at Hogwarts

Mexborough Community Hub held a spooktacular Halloween at Hogwarts on Tuesday 31 October.

20 lucky children applied for their place at Hogwarts and Mexborough Community Hub was transformed into Hogwarts for the evening.

The successful applicants received a wax sealed letter from the owls that included a Platform 9¾ Train Ticket and their Ministry of Magic ID card.

They enjoyed the great feast and activities and games throughout the evening – Lord Voldemort himself with his trusty sidekick, Bellatrix Lestrange joined in the festivities and the event was hosted by Professor McGonagall.

After fun and games, the students left with a goody bag that had a mug, keyring, hoodie, and sweets from the Honeydukes Trolley!

Mex DividerSpotlight

Each edition of this newsletter, we want to shine a vibrant spotlight on our community groups who continuously inspire us with their remarkable achievements and contributions to our local area.

November's Spotlight On: Mexborough Community Hub

There is a little place in Mexborough that very few people know about, you probably do, you just don’t realise it. The old youth club on New Oxford Road (near the Athletic club) has been officially open since August 2022.

Donna Bennett left her full time job to take it on and make an empty, unused building into something that is now being used for the people in Mexborough.  It’s no easy job, it’s voluntary, and £15,000 a year needs to be found to keep it open, and yet the rates are still extremely reasonable.

It still houses two music practice studios and is home to local bands such as The Inspectors. If you’re looking for a yoga class, a Zumba class, free cooking classes, craft group, parent/baby/toddler group, radio station, podcasting, The Bread and Butter Thing, Peer Support Groups, and a lot more besides, then this is where it is going on.  Why not drop them a line on mexcommunityhub@gmail.com to see if there is something for you going on here under one roof.
