Doncaster welcomes Rail Minister MP for visit

Partners from across Doncaster and South Yorkshire, including the Mayors of Doncaster and South Yorkshire and local MPs, have today welcomed Rail Minister Wendy Morton MP to the city as part of the national competition to be the home of Great British Railways.

The Minister visited Doncaster’s rail cluster – including major employers, the Danum Gallery, the Library and Museum and NCATI (National College of Advanced Transport & Infrastructure) and heard from business leaders and students on the future for the railways in South Yorkshire.

City of Doncaster or Doncaster City?

What’s in a name?

Well for Doncaster it’s a pretty big choice and we need your help.

As you may have heard, we achieved city status as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Celebrations...but now we need to choose how we are to be known.

So we're asking the residents of Doncaster a very simple question, which do you prefer? We want a name for the whole of Doncaster!

Warm Weather Warnings

Temperatures have been high across the UK and are set to reach over 30 degrees Celsius (that’s over 90 in Fahrenheit) in Doncaster through the weekend. Although not as extreme as the heat we saw a few weeks ago, the high temperatures are sticking around for longer this time. It is still important that we keep ourselves and others safe and well so we can enjoy the warm weather:

  • Keep hydrated: be sure to have plenty of water and cold drinks. Avoid excess caffeine as this can cause dehydration. When spending time outdoors, consider keeping a reusable water bottle with you when out and about. You can use refill to find your closest water refilling station.
  • Seek the shade where possible: particularly between 11am-3pm
  • Use lots of sunscreen: preferably over factor 30
  • Take some time to relax: try not to do any physical activities that may be too demanding
  • Keep your living space cool: this is especially important for infants, the elderly or those with chronic health conditions
  • Look out for others: make sure babies, children, the elderly or pets are not left alone in stationary cars.
  • Don't forget our furry friends: Road/ground temperatures can be up to 20° hotter than the air temperature, so be careful when walking deciding what time of day to take your pet for a walk.
  • Be alert and seek advice if someone is unwell or further help is needed.
  • Check in: On your friends, family or neighbours to see if they need any support.
  • Be Water aware: Stay safe and be responsible around open water
  • Stay fire safe: don't have a garden bonfire, leave the BBQs at home and take your rubbish home with you when out and about

Coronavirus Reminder

In our previous covid reminders, we have provided the official covid rate per 100,000 of population in Doncaster. However, this is no longer thought to be representative of levels of Covid-19 infection due to free testing and reporting no longer being available to the majority of people.

With that being the case, we will now be reporting the ONS (Office for National Statistics) National rate in our updates.

1 in 25 people were estimated to have covid in England for the week ending 26 July. Although this is lower than the previous week, where the rate was was 1 in 20,  it is clear that as we spend more time attending events and activities over the summer we need to remember that COVID is still around.

With this in mind we should continue protect ourselves and others by staying at home if we have symptoms or test positive and not visiting healthcare facilities or vulnerable friends and family if we have COVID or a possibility of having COVID.

There are simple things we can do in our daily life that will help reduce the spread of coronavirus and other respiratory infections, as well as protecting those at high risk. These include:

  • Getting vaccinated
  • Letting fresh air in if meeting others indoors.
  • Practising good hygiene.
  • Wearing a face covering or a face mask in crowded, enclosed spaces.

Please remember that if you are visiting a hospital, you are required to wear an appropriate face covering.

If you're planning to travel abroad this summer, some countries may still have COVID restrictions. You can check travel requirements on the government website.

Practicing hands, face and space as well as reducing your contacts on the lead up to any travel can help to avoid being unwell on holiday or being unable to go.
