Hello and welcome to the May 2022 edition of the Programmes Funding Newsletter which has been produced in a slightly different, more social media friendly format.
Particular points of interest this month are details of the Doncaster Council Members Ward Budget, the Rebel Business School and the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

The Rebel Business School
The Rebel Business School have partnered with Doncaster Council, Innovate Doncaster, Business Doncaster, SYMCA and the UK Government’s CRF to fully fund the offer of a free live online course that helps people from all backgrounds and situations to become equipped with the tools and skillset to become self-employed or run a business; be this as an alternative to traditional employment, to help supplement income and/or to take their passions a step further.

These sessions are a great move towards your first sale, building your confidence and getting your business idea off the ground in a debt-free way.
Doncaster Council Members Ward Budget
Each Councillor has a ward budget of £3k that can be allocated to small not for profit groups, for activities that will improve their local area. Councillors are well placed to understand local issues and priorities and this budget enables them to help encourage positive change through community action.
The Ward Member Budgets were made available during April 2020 when the country was in lockdown and at that time much of the funding was used to support foodbanks, arts and craft activities that could be carried out at home and supporting groups to undertake activities online. Since that time funding has been used to support the sustainability of important local groups including the purchase of equipment, helping to fund important community events and setting up local groups to provide activities for young people or the elderly.
The Members Ward Budget is quite flexible and can be used as seed funding to encourage the establishment of new groups to deliver local initiatives. It can also be accessed by established local groups, whose future sustainability may have been affected by the Covid pandemic or who wish to expand their activities for the wider benefit of the community.
It is anticipated the next round of funding will be available after May 2022. Anyone wishing to access the fund should contact their local Ward Councillor directly to discuss their project and seek their support. If the project is supported you will need to complete an application form that will be provided by the Councillor and this will be assessed to ensure it complies with the scheme before funding is released.
Strategic Development Funding for FE Providers
As part of the Skills for Jobs white paper, the Strategic Development Fund (SDF) was piloted in 2021- 22 alongside the Local Skills Improvement Plan Trailblazers.
The SDF will provide capital and programme funding to support changes in local teaching and training facilities and provision, enabling FE providers to meet the needs of employers, support local innovation and economic growth, and develop a more efficient overall delivery infrastructure.
£92 million grant funding is being made available through the Strategic Development Fund. This consists of:
- £50 million capital
- £42 million programme.
Expressions of interest forms should be submitted by the 13th May, 2022 (12pm).
Youth Music Launches Trailblazer Fund
Funding of between £2,000 to £.30,000 is available to organisations to run projects for children and young people (aged 25 or under) to make, learn and earn in music through Youth Music's new Trailblazer Fund.
Applications must meet at least one of the following Youth Music themes:
- Early years.
- Disabled, d/Deaf and neurodivergent young people.
- Youth justice system.
- Young people facing barriers.
- Young adults.
- Organisations and the workforce.
The deadline for Round 1 applications is 13th May, 2022 (5pm).
Applications Invited to Royal London Changemakers Programme for Social Entrepreneurs
Funding and specialist support are available for UK social entrepreneurs to help them develop bold ideas and sustainable solutions that will help build people's financial resilience or help people engage in the societal impact of the move to net zero.
Through the programme ten social enterprises and ten individuals will receive:
- Two years of support, including 1-2-1 expert consultancy, learning sessions and action learning with other social entrepreneurs all tackling financial resilience.
- A grant of £20,000 in the first year, with opportunities to access further funding in years two and three.
- The chance to collaborate, and build a relationship with Royal London to work on building resilience for more people facing life shocks.
The deadline for applications is 1pm on 17th May, 2022.
New Fund Opens to Rid Local Streets of Chewing Gum
Administered by Keep Britain Tidy the Chewing Gum Task Force Grant Scheme is open to councils who wish to clean the gum off the pavement in their local areas and invest in long term behaviour change.
Grants of up to £20,000 are available to individual councils to fund street cleansing and/or the purchase of cleaning equipment.
Larger grants of up to £70,000 are available for two or more councils working together to achieve greater impact.
The fund is now open to Expressions of Interest.
Formal applications will be welcomed in a two week window between 9th May and 23rd May, 2022.
LGA Opens Behavioural Insights Programme for 2022
The programme is seeking applications from a group of local authorities who will work together to run a behavioural insights trial to address a behavioural challenge in their local area. Each consortium should consist of at least six councils.
This year, the Local Government Association (LGA) will work with up to three groups of councils – each of which will run a behavioural insights trial. The LGA will commission a supplier to work with each consortium from July 2022 to March 2023 to:
- Support the design and delivery of the trial
- Produce a report including a literature review and outcomes
- Share the work with LGA audiences and networks.
Funding amounts have not yet been released for the current round of the programme. Contact the LGA for further details.
Applications must be submitted by the deadline of 23rd May, 2022 (12pm).
Nationwide Building Society Welcomes Applications for Community Grants
Housing-focused groups in the UK can now apply for grants to deliver projects which align with at least one of Nationwide's three outcomes:
- Preventing people from losing their home.
- Helping people in a home.
- Supporting people to thrive within the home environment.
Grants of between £10,000 and £50,000 are on offer, over a period of either one or two years.
The deadline to apply is 27th May, 2022.
Innovators' Seed Corn Fund Opens for 2022
The Innovators’ Seed Corn Fund is provided by the Garden Industry Manufacturers’ Association (GIMA). GIMA established the fund to help support the drive for innovation within the UK gardening industry.
GIMA is keen to encourage new entrants to the industry and has put together a package of support to enable them to navigate the industry. The aim is to support the launch of innovative, never before seen products for the gardening market.
The winner will receive a grant of £6,000.
The deadline for receipt of applications is Friday 27th May, 2022.
Funding to Support Access to Justice for Migrants, Asylum Seekers and Refugees
The Strategic Legal Fund (SLF) aims to tackle injustices and inconsistencies in law and practice that disadvantage or discriminate against asylum seekers, refugees and migrants as a result of their migration status.
Grants of up to £30,000 are available, though groups are encouraged to apply for lesser amounts.
The next deadline is 31st May, 2022.
Funding to Address Complex Needs in Armed Forces Communities
Armed Forces Covenant Trust has announced the 2022 funding dates for its Force for Change programme. Grants of up to £10,000 over a one-year period are available.
To be eligible to apply, organisations must be one of the following:
- An established registered charity or community interest company (CIC) with substantial recent experience of supporting Armed Forces communities.
- An Armed Forces unit or base.
- A local authority.
- A school.
This year, the programme is intended to be broad to allow those who know the most about what is needed to deliver their ideas.
The next deadline is 30th May, 2022.
Funding for Projects to Improve Wellbeing for Low-Income People
Abrn Financial Fairness Trust, formerly known as the Standard Life Foundation, is offering grants of between £10,000 and £200,000 for projects and activities that address specific inequalities, differences, and vulnerabilities to improve financial wellbeing.
The Trust’s grant programme is focused on three areas that influence financial wellbeing:
- Income:
- Spending:
- Assets:
Funding can be used for project costs and ongoing costs, including staff salaries and overheads.
The next deadline for applications is 3rd June, 2022 (13:00).
£10m Pilot Funding for Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure
The Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) Pilot Fund is intended to encourage large scale, ambitious and commercially sustainable projects that leverage significant private sector investment.
To apply for LEVI funding applicants must be either a Local authority or a partnership/consortium led by a local authority.
Applicants must be planning an electric vehicle charging infrastructure project that:
- Supports the transition to EV use in a local area, with a particular focus on provision for those without off-street parking
- Will provide an improvement in accessible EV charging provision that would not otherwise be met by current or planned EV chargepoint infrastructure
- Shows innovation – this could be either technical or commercial innovation.
A total of £10 million is available and the Fund intends to support between three and eight projects.
The deadline for applications is 17th June, 2022 (11:55pm).
Stop Loan Sharks Community Fund
Local residents' groups, charities, private companies, social enterprises, community and voluntary groups, schools and statutory agencies can now apply for their share of a £160,000 funding pot to tackle loan sharks.
Applications are welcomed from partnerships, with organisations each bidding for £5,000 for a collective project.
The deadline to apply is 30th June, 2022.
Funding for Projects Promoting Veganism
The Vegan Society is a UK charity which exists to increase awareness of veganism for the benefit of people, animals and the environment.
This grants programme is intended to support projects which:
- Raise awareness of veganism in a positive way.
- Promote veganism in a unique or exciting way to non-vegans.
- Support people from marginalised backgrounds to access veganism.
Small to medium non-profit organisations or individuals with non-profit projects may apply. It is a requirement that applicants are vegan.
The next deadline to apply is 30th June, 2022.
Baring Foundation Welcomes Applications from Global Majority-Led Arts Organisations
As part of an ongoing commitment to funding racial justice work across its programmes, the Baring Foundation is now accepting applications to the next round of its Arts and Mental Health Programme.
Grants of between £20,000 and £60,000 are available to provide participatory creative activities to people living with mental health problems, mostly from Global Majority communities.
Projects can include partnerships with other arts and mental health organisations or mental health groups or organisations.
The deadline to apply is midday on 26th July, 2022.
DCMS/Wolfson Museums and Galleries Improvement Fund
The Museums and Galleries Improvement Fund is financed equally by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and the Wolfson Foundation.
A total of £4 million will be available for the 2022/24 round. Grants of up to a maximum £300,000 are available.
This year, the funding is for projects that meet at least one of the following criteria:
- Material improvements to the display and interpretation of collections, in permanent galleries, exhibition spaces and public spaces, to enhance visitor experience.
- Improvements to access and/or interpretation for visitors with disabilities.
- Improvements to environmental controls, collections storage and conservation facilities to enhance the care of collections.
Applications will be accepted from 9th May to 1st August 2022.
Government Announces Launch of £2.6 Billion UK Shared Prosperity Fund
Central to the UK Government’s ‘levelling up’ agenda, the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) is expected to support places across the UK, providing new funding for local investment by March 2025. It is intended to help local areas deliver enhanced outcomes and recognises that even the most affluent parts of the UK contain pockets of deprivation and need support.
The Fund’s investment priorities are:
- Community and Place
- Supporting Local Business
- People and Skills
Funding for the UK Shared Prosperity Fund will be £2.6 billion between 2022 and 2025, with this figure reaching £1.5 billion per year by March 2025.
In order to access UKSPF funding, lead local authorities are being asked to complete an investment plan, setting out how they intend to use and deliver the funding. Lead authorities will be asked to develop their investment plan in conjunction with local stakeholders. Places should establish or designate a local partnership group to consult when developing their investment plan. Plans will then need to be agreed by both the lead local authority and by UK Government to unlock the allocations.
The Government will pay each lead local authority in England, Scotland and Wales annually in advance. In 2022-23, funding will be paid once the local investment plan has been signed off.
Investment plans should be submitted during the submission window, which opens on 30th June, 2022 and closes on 1st August, 2022.
New Large Grants Programme from Armed Forces Covenant Fund
The Reaching and Supporting Armed Forces Communities programme offers grants of up to £100,000 over two or three years for large-scale projects.
Funding could support specific groups within UK Armed Forces communities such as:
- People who have been bereaved.
- Those with unmet needs from physical injury.
- People serving in the Armed Forces who were born overseas or with immediate family overseas.
- Armed Forces families coming to the UK.
- Veterans from LGBT+ communities.
- Female veterans.
- Veterans and families with needs that make them particularly vulnerable.
Applications are accepted from charities and Community Interest Companies (CICs). Groups do not need to be Armed Forces-specific, but must be willing to work in partnership with Armed Forces organisations.
The next deadline is 8th August, 2022.
Neighbourhood Planning Grants and Support Programme
Town and parish councils, neighbourhood forums and prospective neighbourhood forums preparing a neighbourhood development plan or neighbourhood development order may apply for the following:
- A basic grant of between £1,000 and £10,000 for groups writing a neighbourhood plan or neighbourhood development order.
- An additional grant of up to £8,000 is available for groups facing more complex issues, giving a maximum total amount of £18,000.
- Specific packages of technical support where needed.
The programme is particularly keen to help ambitious groups, from all types of neighbourhoods, who want to really influence how their place grows and changes going into the future.
The grant ceiling applies to the period April 2015 to March 2023. All grants must be spent before 31 March 2023.
Expressions of Interest can be submitted at any time before March 2023.
Two New Grant Programmes to Improve Outcomes for Disabled People
National charity Motability has announced it will provide £50 million to UK charities and organisations in the accessible transport sector from 2022 to 2025, starting with two new funding streams:
- Community Transport Grants
- Wheelchair Sector Grants
Both programmes will offer grants of between £100,000 and £4 million for a maximum of three years.
Community Transport Grants can be used to cover:
- Staffing and/or volunteer costs to increase supply of Community Transport services.
- Leasing or buying Community Transport vehicles
- Initiatives to influence transport strategy, policy and funding.
Wheelchair Sector Grants should be used to:
- Help individuals to source quality equipment by topping up self-funding.
- Raise awareness of the challenges faced by disabled people in obtaining suitable, quality and affordable wheelchairs.
- Develop or improve programmes which fund high quality and affordable equipment.
- Support existing initiatives which provide best practice solutions but need further support to remain operational or expand.
Applications can be submitted at any time.
