It's official - we're going for city status!
As part of the celebrations for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee next year, a competition has been launched to grant city status to towns in the UK.
Today Doncaster launches its bid to gain city status – and we’re asking for YOUR support in the build up to the submission on 8 December.
We want to be one of those towns which receives this honour and we are appealing to everyone in Doncaster to get behind the bid. We’re also carrying the flag for Yorkshire and bidding to become the national home for the new Great British Railways (GBR), bringing jobs and investment outside of London.
We’ve been waiting a long time – this will be our fourth attempt and we believe the time is right, given how far we have come, that Doncaster City becomes a reality.
We have until early December to make our case loud and clear.
Lots of people already think we are a city – and we are in all but name. We think, look and behave like a city and we have so much more than a lot of cities already.
Just think - we already have an international airport, a wildlife park, a racecourse, historic and modern architecture including one of only three Mansion Houses in the country – our people, communities and businesses and innovators – there is so much to share.
We’re encouraging all residents to join the campaign by sharing photos of your favourite places across Doncaster on social media, creating you own videos and using #GoingForItDN.
Doncaster’s bid is being compiled by Team Doncaster, a partnership of organisations from across the borough.
