Doncaster Council Update
Dear resident,
You may already be aware that there is an amber flood alert for rain and possible flooding in certain areas of Doncaster. This has been issued by the Environment Agency over the weekend.
Flood Alerts are currently in place for the Lower Don, River Idle, River Went and River Dearne catchment. This covers the following areas:
- Bawtry
- Bentley
- Conisborough
- Clay Lane
- Fishlake
- Intake
- Mexborough
- Scawthorpe
- Tickhill
- Wadworth
In preparation for flooding, Doncaster Council has been delivering sandbags since the evening of Sunday 17th January and we will continue to do so ahead of the forthcoming rainfall and impact. If you live in one of these areas you will have or should be receiving some sandbags just within your property boundary. This is to help you prepare your property for the risk of flooding.
The bags are being delivered as early as possible to all properties which have suffered from recent flooding and those that may be affected by this flood alert. Assessing the current forecast we are preparing for surface water issues commencing early Tuesday 19th January, raised River flows and possible flooding late Tuesday and into Wednesday 20th January.
Using the intelligence we have from recent flood events, and taking into account work we have done to mitigate flood impacts since the November 2019 floods, we will be issuing the sandbags to those properties likely to be affected by surface water and fast acting river catchments first, moving into the River flooding areas afterwards.
We are continuing with this and we have plans in place based on areas which have flooded before so please don’t call us for sandbags.
For information on how to build a sandbag wall and how to distribute sandbags around your property to protect it:
Further information on how to deal with flooding can be on the council website under the flood advice page above so please do have a read of this and start preparing your property for flooding including moving furniture and valuables upstairs.
Please stay alert and check flood warnings regularly and your area here:
and you can also follow the Environment Agency on Twitter.
We will issue regular updates on the situation on Doncaster Council’s Facebook and Twitter.
Please also be aware that we are mindful of the pandemic and we urge you to continue to follow the current Covid-19 advice and be careful and stay safe.
Kind regards
David Coulson
