Temporary Traffic Lights on the Whitesands for Ground Investigation Works
Motorists are being advised to allow extra time for journeys through the Whitesands in November as ground investigation work takes place in preparation for the next phase of the Whitesands Project.
The investigations are a normal part of preparing for construction and will help the project team confirm existing information about underground structures and services, such as pipes and cables.
To allow the work to be carried out safely, temporary traffic management will be needed:
- Monday 2 November to Friday 6 November: three-way temporary traffic lights will be in place near the junction with Bank Street, with one lane closed.
- From Monday 9 November for one week: two-way temporary traffic lights will be in place on the Whitesands near New Bazaar Car Park.
Drivers should allow extra time for their journeys while these measures are in place.
The investigation work is being carried out ahead of the next phase of the Whitesands Project, which is currently scheduled to begin next summer.
We appreciate that the temporary traffic management may cause some disruption and thank residents, businesses and road users for their patience and understanding while this important preparatory work is carried out.
Essential Resurfacing Works on A780 in Dumfries
Essential road resurfacing works will take place on the A780 at Laurieknowe and Cassalands in Dumfries during November.
The works will take place on:
- Laurieknowe: 9 to 11 November, 8am to 5pm.
- Cassalands: 12 to 13 November, 8am to 5pm.
Road closures and signed diversions will be in place while the works are carried out.
Road users are advised to follow local signage and allow extra time for their journeys during these periods.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused while these essential improvements to the local road network are carried out.

There's Still Time to Have Your Say on Accessing Council Services
There is still time to share your views on how you contact and access Dumfries and Galloway Council services, with our Customer Experience Review survey closing at 10pm on Sunday 15 November.
We want to hear about what currently works well, what can be difficult or frustrating, which ways of contacting us you value and what matters most when accessing council services.
You can take part whether you usually contact us online, by telephone, by email or in person. You can also complete the survey if you have not contacted the council recently.
No specific changes have been agreed as part of the review. Feedback from the survey will be considered alongside other evidence and engagement to help inform the review and any future recommendations.
The survey takes around 10 minutes to complete, so if you haven’t already taken part, there’s still time to have your say.
The survey closes at 10pm on Sunday 15 November. Paper copies are also available from council Customer Service Centres.

Are you Emergency Ready?
Everyday emergencies can disrupt the essential services you rely on – like your phone, water, power and the internet.
Taking a few simple steps to prepare can make a big difference, helping you manage while emergency support reaches those who need it most.
If you or someone you know might need extra support during a gas, electricity or water outage, they may be able to sign up for the Priority Services Register. It’s a free service that ensures utility companies know who may need extra assistance. Lots of households are eligible, including those of pensionable age, people with long-term illnesses and families with children under 5.
