Friday 16 October
Welcome to Council News, your fortnightly update from our council.
Our team is always keen to give you updates on the things that matter the most to you.
We also want to share positive stories about things that are happening in your community.
If you have news that you'd like to share – shining a light on an individual, community group or event – we would love to feature them in our Community bulletin.
Please email us at communitybulletin@dumgal.gov.uk with feedback or story ideas and one of our reporters will get back to you.
Essential A710 Road Closure at Islesteps Bridge
The A710 at Islesteps Bridge will close temporarily from 8am on Monday 26 October until 5pm on Friday 20 November 2026 while essential repairs are carried out.
The closure is needed to allow our Roads Service to repair a landslip and erosion to the embankment. The road will remain closed for the duration of the work.
A signed diversion will be in place via the A710, U224n Park Road, A711 and C10n, returning to the A710. The route will operate in reverse for traffic travelling in the opposite direction.
A one-way system will also operate for light vehicles only, using the U221n southbound and U220n northbound. Alternative access arrangements will be maintained for emergency services.
We are working with local bus operators to minimise disruption to public transport and explore alternative routes where possible.
Advance warning signs will be placed in the area. Local businesses along the A710 will remain open as usual throughout the work.
We appreciate that this closure will cause disruption and thank residents, businesses and road users for their patience while these essential repairs are completed.
 Green Libraries Week
Residents are being encouraged to share, reuse and connect with nature during Green Libraries Week, from 21 to 28 October.
Activities at Ewart Library include nature writing, coasts and marine life, peatland restoration, monster junk modelling and a collection of green-themed books. Families can also take part in Scare, Share and Wear, donating, swapping or taking a pre-loved Halloween costume at participating council libraries.
All activities are free, although booking is required for some events.
Ask the Question Before Handing Over Your Waste
We are supporting Keep Scotland Beautiful’s national campaign to tackle flytipping and encourage everyone to dispose of their waste responsibly.
Flytipping does not make waste disappear. It passes the problem on, leaving communities, landowners, businesses and public services to deal with the environmental and financial cost.
If you are paying someone to take your waste away, ask for their SEPA registration number before handing it over. Check the number on the SEPA register to make sure they are authorised to carry waste.
If they cannot provide a registration number, or you cannot find them on the register, do not hand over your waste.
Together, we can help prevent waste from ending up where it should not.
Maintenance Dredging at Kirkcudbright Harbour
Maintenance dredging has been carried out at Kirkcudbright Harbour using a specialist water-injection dredging vessel.
The vessel loosens built-up silt on the harbour bed, allowing the outgoing tide to carry the sediment away from the navigation channel.
Regular dredging helps maintain safe water depths and keeps the harbour accessible for fishing vessels and other harbour users. This work is needed because tidal processes continually bring new silt into the harbour.
