Welcome to Council News, your fortnightly update from our council.
Our team is always keen to give you updates on the things that matter the most to you.
We also want to share positive stories about things that are happening in your community.
If you have news that you'd like to share – shining a light on an individual, community group or event – we would love to feature them in our Community bulletin.
Please email us at communitybulletin@dumgal.gov.uk with feedback or story ideas and one of our reporters will get back to you.
Have Your Say on the Future of Whitesands
We’re inviting residents, businesses and community groups in Dumfries to take part in the next stage of public engagement for the Whitesands Flood Protection Scheme.
Thank you to everyone who joined us at our drop-in sessions on 2 and 3 September. Your feedback is important and will help shape future decisions about the development of Whitesands.
If you couldn’t attend in person, there’s still time to share your views through the online survey.
The Whitesands Flood Protection Scheme represents a major investment in Dumfries. Alongside essential flood defences, the project will enhance the River Nith waterfront with new landscaping, improved pathways, lighting, seating and play areas.
Supported by the Scottish Government, this phase of the project focusses on creating a vibrant and inclusive riverside space. We’re especially keen to hear your thoughts on Greensands, Upper Whitesands and Dock Park. Tell us how you use these areas, what you enjoy and what would encourage you to visit more often.
Temporary Road Closure for Resurfacing
The B721 at Fish Cross in Annan will be closed between 9am and 5pm on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 September to allow for resurfacing works.
A signed diversion will be in place, using the B721, A75(T), B6357 and B721. Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout, but emergency vehicle access will not be available during the closure.
To stay informed about roadworks across the region, sign up for our weekly road maintenance updates. You can also share your views by taking part in our Roads and Transport Survey.
Apply for Permission to Attach Something to a Streetlight
Galas, fetes and other similar events play an important role in community life in towns and villages across Dumfries and Galloway.
Did you know that we accept applications to attach hanging baskets, banners, bunting and festive lights to streetlighting columns?
You must have a licence to attach items to a streetlight. These items may be removed if we have not given you a licence to attach them.
We must ensure any streetlighting attachments do not pose a risk to the safety of the public, or other highway equipment, such as traffic signals. We have to ensure the streetlighting column is strong enough to safely support the attachment and that the attachment will not affect the lighting equipment.
