Friday 27 June
Welcome to Council News, your fortnightly update from our council.
Our team is always keen to give you updates on the things that matter the most to you.
We also want to share positive stories about things that are happening in your community.
If you have news that you'd like to share – shining a light on an individual, community group or event – we would love to feature them in our Community bulletin.
Please email us at communitybulletin@dumgal.gov.uk with feedback or story ideas and one of our reporters will get back to you.
 Youth Voice on Litter Prevention
Dumfries and Galloway Council is working on a new plan to help stop littering and keep our region clean and green – and we need your help.
We're asking children and young people to share their thoughts on how we can:
- Stop people dropping litter.
- Help everyone recycle and reuse more.
- Protect our towns, countryside, and coastlines for the future.
Their ideas will help shape our Litter Prevention Strategy and action plan that will be used to make real changes across the region. The survey is open until 5pm on Sunday 13 July.
Feedback will be included in a report that goes to our council’s Economy and Infrastructure Committee in September.
Their voice matters – children and young people can give their feedback through the online survey.
There are also some colouring in sheets that can be used to explore what children think about littering.
Download the sheets below, and you can send a picture of the completed drawings with the child's name and age to LitterStrategy@dumgal.gov.uk. We'll share pictures of the best ones on our social media channels.
NHS Dumfries and Galloway Charity
The NHS Dumfries and Galloway Charity is launching its annual grant programme with applications invited from local third sector and community organisations that provide a service or support to the local health board.
Grant applications are invited up to and including £5000. Your application should provide evidence as to why the funding is needed and also the expected impact on those who will benefit from your work. The charity is particularly interested in projects that support areas such as:
- Unpaid carer / befriending services.
- Mitigation of social isolation.
- Support to help individuals leave hospitals into community care.
- Development of platforms to support community signposting to appropriate third sector support services.
- Start-up grants that address of health inequalities across the region.
- Physical activity programmes for improving physical and mental health wellbeing.
The grants can only be used to support the Dumfries and Galloway community and cannot be used to provide services out of the region. Grants will be prioritised that are linked to developing new or enhancing existing services.
Further information and advice can be obtained by contacting the Charity Operational Manager, Nick Mitchell – nick.mitchell@nhs.scot
The closing date for all applications is 22 August 2025.
Dumfries and Galloway Area Committee Funds are Open for Applications
Applications are invited for grant funds by all the region's area committees.
Dumfries and Galloway Council are committed to helping communities tackle poverty and inequalities through their four area committees – Annandale and Eskdale, Nithsdale, Stewartry and Wigtown.
Each committee has agreed their own priorities, criteria and eligibility which are detailed on the grants and funding page of the council website. They include, for example, projects relating to clothing, food, fuel, connectivity, social prescribing, mental health, transport and employability.
There are various application deadlines depending on the type of support applied for and a completed application form is needed.
