Stranraer’s waterfront offers great opportunities to boost tourism, which would bring in more people, increase spending in the town and help the town centre grow.
Reshaping Stranraer is a developing range of projects to develop Stranraer as an even more vibrant cultural and leisure destination.
Together, these projects will deliver a game-changing investment programme of over £30 million for Stranraer, with more to come.
In this update, we share the latest milestones and next steps for projects to be carried out this spring.
 Stranraer Marina Expansion Project
The project to expand the facility will see over 200 berths established. It will improve shoreside facilities and access arrangements, deliver a new marine research facility and a new home for the coastguard.
Latest milestones
The first public event of the statutory consultation for the planning application was held in November 2024. The statutory consultation event for the planning application and Marine Licence application will be held on 24 April, 4pm to 8pm at the Millenium Centre.
This public event will include consultation for the planning application and Marine Licence application as well as hosting workshops to capture information on the socio-economic impact of the project from local residents, businesses and sector-specific stakeholders including the marine and hospitality industries.
Stranraer Waterfront Creative Placemaking Engagement
Creative Stranraer is conducting a programme of events focusing on Stranraer waterfront to ensure that the planned investments there are shaped by the local community’s sense of place, local heritage and ambition for the waterfront as a local asset.
The team has recorded the public's priorities for the future of the waterfront space, as well as gathering ideas for creative expression of Stranraer's identity within the designs.
What you’ll see in 2025
A programme of events and activities is currently being developed and will be promoted over the coming weeks and months.
The waterfront engagement and creative placemaking process will continue to feed into the design development for the Marina Project and further inform the development of the full business case.

Stranraer Water Sports Hub
The project emerged after Stranraer hosted the Skiffie World Championships in 2019. The new build facilities will increase access to water-based recreation, drive tourism potential and deliver events, training, community activity and regatta facilities.
Dumfries and Galloway Council has secured funding from the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund and provided match funding to Stranraer Water Sports Association, that is delivering the project.
What you’ll see in 2025
The ground breaking ceremony to mark construction of new Water Sports Hub took place on Wednesday 19 February.
Stranraer Water Sports Association will be hosting SkiffieWorlds 2025, the St Ayles Skiff World Championships in July 2025 and the Scottish Fin and Foil Championships in August 2025 – as well as continuing to run their Let's Get Wet Programme.
 The George
The project will deliver a new multi-purpose facility in the old listed building including artist studios, a climbing/bouldering centre and a 30 bed ‘bunk house’ facility. The project is designed to deliver benefits to the local economy as well as for health and wellbeing.
The project is funded by the Scottish Government and the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund.
What you’ll see in early 2025
The next stage of the build will focus on further works to the roof and completion of the restoration of the building’s façade to allow all scaffolding to be removed.
