A call has been issued for local councils in Devon to come together and take the opportunity to improve services, whatever decision government makes on the restructure of local government.
The message came at a special meeting of our Cabinet this week, as it agreed the draft report setting out proposals which will be submitted to Government later this month.
Devon’s proposals are for a single unitary authority to replace the County Council and the existing eight district councils. The existing authorities of Plymouth City Council and Torbay Council would remain as they are.
Our gritting teams were called out several times this week, indicating the start of the cold weather season!
With road surface temperature close to, or just below, zero at times, gritters were out on routes around the county.
16 Days of Action is an annual campaign, and a global call for an end to gender-based violence, and the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls.
It starts next week, from Tuesday 25 November, which is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
Throughout the 16 days this year, organisations in Devon will be hosting a range of events and activities.
Councillor Robin Julian has been appointed as the new Fostering Member Champion for our Children’s Scrutiny Committee today.
This new role demonstrates the Committee’s determination to ensure fostering remains a priority, with robust scrutiny, continuous improvement, and the voices of foster carers and children in care at the heart of decision-making.
The number of complaints made about us that were referred to the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman increased last year (2024/25) to 165 compared to 151 the previous year.
However, during that period pay outs to resolve complaints fell by a quarter with more complaints being resolved earlier and by meditation, and improvements are currently being made to the way complaints are handled.
As Black Friday and the Christmas season approaches, we’re warning people to be aware of scams.
Phishing emails are on the rise as cyber criminals exploit the flood of promotional emails and online shopping traffic, to make their scams look legitimate.
Their goal is to blend in, to trick you into clicking malicious links or sharing sensitive information.
