World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week 18-24 November
World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week (WAAW)
Antibiotic resistance remains one of the biggest threats facing us today.
Do you know what Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is?
Antimicrobial medicines help keep us safe from illnesses caused by germs like bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. When these medicines don’t work well or stop working altogether, it can be tough to treat these illnesses.
Antibiotics are essential for treating bacterial infections. However, using them too often or the wrong way in people, animals and plants can reduce their effectiveness and make it harder to cure even simple infections, even in young and healthy people.
This year’s World Health Organisation (WHO) annual campaign aims to Educate Advocate Act now to improve awareness and understanding of antimicrobial resistance and encourage best practice using a ‘One Health’ approach…
What can you do:
- Prevent infections by regularly washing your hands – make handwashing easy (and sink locations clear) for staff, residents and visitors to your setting
- Ensure staff and residents are up to date with routine and seasonal vaccinations (and travel vaccinations if appropriate)
- For infections like coughs, colds, sore throats and flu, which our bodies are good at fighting off on their own, staff can talk to a pharmacist (or GP for residents) about how to treat the symptoms first, rather than requesting antibiotics
- Staff and residents should only take antibiotics when and as prescribed and for the duration detailed, never use leftover antibiotics, never share antibiotics with others or use antibiotics that have been imported or purchased over the internet
- Return any unused drugs to the pharmacy, always making sure medications are taken as prescribed. Releases from unused drugs disposed of in toilets, bins or waste dumps contribute to exacerbating AMR
- Have a hydration station! Encouraging residents to have plenty to drink (or high liquid containing foods) can help reduce the chances of urinary tract infections (and so avoid illness resulting in needing antibiotics)

Heanton Nursing Home’s Mocktail Party - Good news story
Heanton Nursing Home in Barnstaple recently held a vibrant Hawaiian-themed mocktail party. What began as a fun conversation about favourite cocktails soon evolved into an exciting event.
The idea quickly gained momentum with a tropical-inspired gathering, filled with colourful, fruit-infused drinks, festive decorations, and Hawaiian music.
The kitchen team prepared vibrant fruit platters that were as beautiful as they were delicious whilst team members dressed up in Hawaiian attire, including some borrowed shirts from team member Robin’s own collection.
Sabrina Stell, Home Administrator of Heanton Nursing Home said, “even though there was no alcohol, everyone agreed that the atmosphere and creativity made the event a huge success!”
Heanton Nursing Home’s Hawaiian mocktail party highlighted the power of community and connection, showing how a shared vision and a little creativity can bring people together and brighten spirits.
