Devon Music Education Hub are delighted to be working with R&K Systems and Music In Devon Initiative (MIDI) to present the Devon Secondary Schools Battle of the Bands 2025.
Bands and aspiring artists from secondary schools/settings across Devon, Plymouth and Torbay can apply to join us at one of our regional heats, where they will get feedback on their performance from music industry professionals – our regional heats will take place at the following dates and locations:
- Tuesday 4 February 2025 | Petroc College, Barnstaple
- Thursday 6 February 2025 | King Edward VI Community College, Totnes
- Tuesday 11 February 2025 | Uffculme School, Cullompton
- Thursday 13 February 2025 | Plympton Academy, Plymouth
A selection of bands will be invited to the Battle of the Bands Final at Exeter Phoenix on 25 February 2025, and could win the chance to professionally record their music and perform at high profile festivals.

South Devon Youth Jazz, in association with Devon Music Education Hub, are delighted to present this term’s Devon Youth Jazz Workshop on Tuesday 26 November 2024 at King Edward VI Community College, Totnes TQ9 5JX from 6-8pm with special guest Mike Outram. Mike Outram is one of the UK’s leading jazz educators and guitarists, and works with all the leading UK conservatoires alongside his own online community of 700 players called ‘Electric Campfire’. He will be supported by a professional rhythm section alongside regular tutors Sam Massey (brass) and Jade Gall (woodwind).

Devon Music Education Hub are delighted to offer young musicians from schools across Devon, Plymouth and Torbay the opportunity to perform at Princesshay shopping precinct in Exeter this Christmas.
This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the musical talent of our young people and share some festive joy with Christmas shoppers.
All types of musical performances are welcome but, due to the impact on local residents, drumming and other louder activities may not be appropriate.

Finchcocks are offering a fantastic opportunity for 5 secondary aged students in Devon to take piano lessons for free for 1 year! The cost of up to 30 x 30-minute piano lessons will be fully funded by Finchcocks for the successful applicants. The programme is designed for young people with a passion for music who are keen to learn the piano. To be eligible for the award, the students should in receipt of Pupil Premium, or from low-income families who would otherwise struggle to access piano lessons. Applications for the funding should be referred by the young person’s secondary school teacher and made to Programme Director Jenny Maslin email jenny@finchcocks.co.uk. The deadline for applications is 1 December 2024.
Join Elfyn Jones and Kip Pratt for this practical and informative CPD session for anyone involved in leading music in primary schools, including classroom teachers, teaching assistants and Visiting Music Teachers.
As part of the session, Kip and Elfyn will share fun songs, games and activities from Sonopera CIC’s ongoing project in East Devon. Let’s Play Outside demonstrates how informal musical learning through play and song can be incorporated in the classroom, playground, forest school and other outdoor learning environments, particularly with younger children.
This in-person session will take place from 4-5pm on Thursday 21 November 2024 at Whimple Primary School, School Hill, Whimple EX5 2TS.
Torbay and South Devon Music Centre (TSDMC) are excited to invite you to a Jazz Workshop evening on Friday 29 November from 4.30-7pm at Torquay Boys Grammar School, Torquay TQ27EL We have Vincent Touret and Joshua Cusworth leading the sessions with our regular tutors working with groups to experiment with and play jazz!

Vincent Touret specialised in street music after graduating in trombone in a classical conservatoire in France. For 15 years he has created numerous joyful street bands with children, with teenagers and with amateur adults alongside touring with the pro Latin street band La Belle Image Fanfare. Now living in England, he joined the creatives street bands Tongues of Fire and Little Big Horns, runs the Big Friendly Street Band in primary school and some street music workshops about playing together, improvising, welcoming all ages and abilities to make some joyful big sounds!

London based Joshua Cusworth started playing trumpet at the age of 7. During his time as a Drapers Company Scholar at the Royal College of music, he studied classical trumpet with Kate Moore, Jason Evans, Mark Calder, and Dan Newell, jazz trumpet with Mark Armstrong, and Martin Shaw, and baroque trumpet with Paul Sharp. His Versatility has established him as an eminent Classical, Jazz, Big Band, Baroque, Contemporary, and Solo trumpeter as well as regular work as a Session musician. Alongside performing, Joshua holds an ABRSM diploma in Trumpet teaching, working with the Tri-Borough Music Hub, InDeep Music Therapy and Royal College of Music Sparks Programme to deliver successful private trumpet lessons and workshops to people of all ages.
This workshop is open to all instrumentalists under 18. You do not need to have taken music exams, but be interested in jazz/improvisation, and there will be a short performance for parents at 6.45pm. This opportunity is FREE for Torbay and South Devon Music Centre members, with a £5 charge for non-members.
