Welcome back to a new school year. We hope you enjoyed a well deserved rest over the summer break and the new term has started well.
What’s new for this term?
Devon’s Ordinarily Available Inclusive Education Framework went live online at the end of last term. The Ordinarily Available Inclusive Education Framework (OAIP) sets out expectations of what high quality, inclusive practice should look like for all children and young people in all schools and settings, including those with SEND. The framework has 10 key strands including: leadership and culture, relational practice, teaching and learning, the learning environment, assessment and planning, staff knowledge, skills, training and use of expertise, attendance and belonging, transitions, working in partnership with parents and working in partnership with children and young people. This will support all children and young people to attend, engage and thrive in their educational setting.
Many schools have already attended a briefing session, however, there are two more sessions running this term (one is today, Monday 30 September, the other is on Wednesday 2 October). Our aim is for every school in Devon to have attended a briefing session by the end of this term. Please share this with leaders in your setting.
We are aiming to release the new Ordinarily Available Targeted Support Framework (detailing support for the 4 areas of need) in the Spring term.
A new training programme supporting those who are finding it hard to attend school is now available. It will provide schools with an awareness of the early indicators and risk factors associated with Emotionally Based School Avoidance and how schools can intervene early to promote positive outcomes for school attendance. The aim is for all mainstream primary and secondary schools (maintained and academies) to be trained in using the resources, ATTEND framework and School Well-Being cards, that will be given to attendees on the day.
Further to our email at the end of the summer term, we wanted to let you know more about how the Devon SEND and Inclusion Teams will be working with all North Devon primary and secondary schools from September.
Following on from the success of our SEND Support Consultations last term, these will now take place weekly on a Tuesday AND Wednesday. Tuesday will be primarily for Early Years and Primary settings and Wednesday for Secondary and Post 16 settings. However, we recognise that these days may not always be possible so feel free to book onto the alternative day where needed. Find out more information here: SEND support consultations for schools - Support for schools and settings (devon.gov.uk)
The Devon SEND network meetings will take place before half term in person across the county and online. This is an opportunity to hear important updates from teams and services as well as the chance to network with colleagues from other settings.
The SEND advisory team work with all Local Authority and Multi Academy Trust mainstream schools to support and develop a whole school approach to SEND. You should have received an email from your SEND Advisory teacher detailing the support on offer, which includes locality peer support groups, induction or mentoring meetings, bespoke support for OAIP and whole schools systems and processes and a whole school SEND review. All of this is free to access.
If you would like to know more, please contact your area SEND Advisory teacher:
James Crompton – SEND Advisory Teacher for Exeter, Teignbridge, Tiverton
Hannah Jones – SEND Advisory Teacher for East Devon
Melissa New- SEND Advisory Teacher for North Devon and Torridge
Hannah Downing – SEND Advisory Teacher for South Hams, West, Crediton
All mainstream schools will be sent individual school SEND profile tools for 2023-2024 this term, once the Department for Education data is finalised. Please look out for this in your inbox (it may go to admin or the head teacher). If you would like to know more about what this is and how to use this strategically in your setting, there is a short, free virtual workshop being held on Thursday 07 November 2024. Use the button below to book your place.
Children and Family Health Devon (CFHD) invite you to find out more about who they are, their new pathways of care and how they help support children and young people in Devon.
There’s a drop-in event on Wednesday 16 October 202 at Oaklands Court in Tiverton (EX16 6TG) from 10am until 3pm.
They’re also hosting an online Q&A session using Microsoft Teams on Wednesday 6 November 2024 from 10am until 12 noon. To book a place please email cfhd.communications@nhs.net. The session will be recorded and shared on the CFHD website so those unable to attend can catch up at a time that suits them.
