Applications for 2024-25 Music Education Grant (MEG) funding close on Friday 27 September. All Devon and Torbay maintained schools and academies receive funding towards their delivery of the vision and aims of the National Plan for Music Education as part of the core offer from Devon Music Education Hub. To be eligible to receive funding, schools need to use the School Music Development Plan self-evaluation tool and share their judgment on current provision, as well as completing a basic data submission on engagement with music activities during 2023-24. This forms part of the Hub’s reporting requirements to DfE. In return the school will receive:
- Advice and support from a dedicated Music Development Lead for your area.
- Music Education Grant (MEG) funding allocation of £400 per school.
- Instrumental and vocal tuition bursaries for secondary schools.
- Fully funded access to award-winning digital resources like Charanga Musical School (primary), Charanga Secondary (secondary), and Focus on Sound Pro (secondary) to support music curriculum delivery.
- Fully funded loan of a wide range of class instrument sets and specialist equipment.
- Access to an extensive range of live music events and workshops.
- Regular conference, training and networking opportunities for the music education workforce.
- Weekly email Hubdates with news, resources, events and additional funding opportunities.
- School membership of Music Mark, the membership organisation and subject association for music.
- Opportunities to make music out-of-school through Hub supported ensembles and progression opportunities.
- Subsidised instrument loans and an Assisted Instrument Purchase Scheme for children and young people.
For more information please visit the Devon Music Education Hub website or contact your local Music Development Lead.
*Please note that Plymouth schools are not eligible for MEG funding.

As of September 2024, Devon County Youth Brass Band is under new leadership. Chris Spreadbury and Matt Hawkins are delighted to be taking over the baton from Pete Jones, after 20 years of incredible service.
Devon has a rich heritage in brass banding, and we firmly believe we should have a thriving county band to match. Devon County Youth Brass Band’s first gathering day of the year is going to be an absolute cracker, and one that no young brass player in Devon will want to miss!
We are kicking off the year with a bang, and have organised a workshop provided by players from the South West’s premier brass band, The Flowers Band. The attending brass students will receive expert tuition from some of the area’s best brass musicians, culminating in a performance for family and friends at the end of the day. The workshop will start at 10am, and finish at 4pm, with a performance for parents/carers/family/friends at 3:30pm. The venue is King Edward VI Community College TQ9 5JX.
Current members of DCYBB can also attend the Open Day for free. Following the workshop, we will contact all attendees with information on how to sign up to the band for the academic year 2024-25.

Designed with KS2 students in mind, these thrilling and interactive concerts will be presented by award-winning composer and conductor, James Redwood and actor/director, Lynne Forbes. Explore the Orchestra: Sea Stories will feature material that fuses symphonic music with the written word and will explore how the oceans have ignited the musical imaginations of many.
So set your masts – and prepare the sails – and get ready to hear pieces from opera, films and symphonies. Also featured will be a specially composed participatory song, composed and led by James, in addition to a newly composed body percussion piece created in collaboration with schools from Portsmouth.
