As we enjoy the last blast of summer, planners are already thinking about the colder seasons, so this issue also contains a link to the new South West England Infection Prevention and Control Winter Readiness Toolkit.
We do our best to keep the content and structure of our PEN website up-to-date in these fast-changing times and your suggestions on how to improve the website are always welcome.
Invitation to learn more about Devon County Council's Strengths-Based Approach to adult social care
Devon County Council is committed to supporting its internal and external workforce in developing skills and competencies in strengths-based approaches. We are pleased to announce that we have an exciting opportunity coming up for care workers to take part in a Strengths Based approach training pilot.
Tandra Forster, Director of Integrated Adult Social Care, Devon County Council said:
“It’s important that we progress our strengths-based workforce development strategy with both parts of our workforce: internal and external. Providers are key partners in building our collaborative approach to strengths-based working”.
This opportunity is a pilot at this stage so only available to a limited number of care workers - 2 per provider organisation.
Key themes will include:
- Understanding Devon’s approach to the Care Act
- Goal setting and outcomes-focused working
- TECs (Technology Enabled Care) and other digital resources to support and enhance care delivery.
- Person centred planning tools e.g. 247 grid, PATH planning
- Constant Supervision; a Human Rights perspective
Care workers attending the course must be able to commit to the total learning / training hours in October and November and have their manager’s approval. This will involve 4-5 hours interactive webinars plus self-directed e-learning which can be done at your own pace. Spaces will be available on a first come first serve basis (up to 2 staff in any one provider organisation).
We are encouraging both managers and frontline workers to apply. Community Services providers (personal care, day, enabling, personal assistants and micro-providers) will be prioritised at this stage. There will also be a requirement for a pre and post evaluation and a one month follow up.
If you are interested in signing up for the course, please complete the form below. Please note that manager approval will be required before expressions of interest can be accepted. If you are a personal assistant / micro-provider (a self-employed, sole trader), we will contact you to verify this.

Nursing Home Celebrates Afternoon Tea Week - Good News Story
Residents and the team at Heanton Nursing Home celebrated Afternoon Tea Week in style with an enchanting English Garden Themed party. The event celebrated this British tradition while creating a social gathering throughout the home.
The day began with flower arranging which offered a multi-sensory experience which can improve motor skills (the gentle movement of moving hands and fingers) encouraging mobility for those who are less mobile.
The arrangements were then used to decorate their living room at the Barnstaple Nursing Home, perfectly matching the Garden Party theme. The space was further brightened up with balloons and favour bags to get everyone in the celebratory spirit! In the afternoon, thanks to the catering team, an array of beautifully decorated handmade cakes, biscuits, sandwiches (and of course tea!) were displayed for all to enjoy. Trays were prepared and taken up to the rooms of the less mobile family members.
Lesley Heale, a Care Assistant at Heanton Nursing Home, commented ‘just the little extras like the pretty plates and cardboard teapots made it so special for us all.”
