Supporting health and social care providers in Devon

This issue contains an invitation to participate in new training on strengths-based approaches to adult social care being piloted by Devon County Council. Spaces are limited, so please register your interest as soon as possible using our online form.

As we enjoy the last blast of summer, planners are already thinking about the colder seasons, so this issue also contains a link to the new South West England Infection Prevention and Control Winter Readiness Toolkit.

We do our best to keep the content and structure of our PEN website up-to-date in these fast-changing times and your suggestions on how to improve the website are always welcome.

Invitation to learn more about Devon County Council's Strengths-Based Approach to adult social care

Devon County Council is committed to supporting its internal and external workforce in developing skills and competencies in strengths-based approaches. We are pleased to announce that we have an exciting opportunity coming up for care workers to take part in a Strengths Based approach training pilot.

Tandra Forster, Director of Integrated Adult Social Care, Devon County Council said:

“It’s important that we progress our strengths-based workforce development strategy with both parts of our workforce: internal and external. Providers are key partners in building our collaborative approach to strengths-based working”.

This opportunity is a pilot at this stage so only available to a limited number of care workers - 2 per provider organisation.

Key themes will include:

  • Understanding Devon’s approach to the Care Act
  • Goal setting and outcomes-focused working
  • TECs (Technology Enabled Care) and other digital resources to support and enhance care delivery.
  • Person centred planning tools e.g. 247 grid, PATH planning
  • Constant Supervision; a Human Rights perspective

Care workers attending the course must be able to commit to the total learning / training hours in October and November and have their manager’s approval. This will involve 4-5 hours interactive webinars plus self-directed e-learning which can be done at your own pace. Spaces will be available on a first come first serve basis (up to 2 staff in any one provider organisation).

We are encouraging both managers and frontline workers to apply. Community Services providers (personal care, day, enabling, personal assistants and micro-providers) will be prioritised at this stage. There will also be a requirement for a pre and post evaluation and a one month follow up.

If you are interested in signing up for the course, please complete the form below. Please note that manager approval will be required before expressions of interest can be accepted. If you are a personal assistant / micro-provider (a self-employed, sole trader), we will contact you to verify this.

Capacity Tracker Top Tips

Here are some Top Tips for providers when updating the Capacity Tracker…

  • Updating the Capacity Tracker regularly (Updating every 24 - 48 hours) will provide real-time information for the health and social care system and will automatically ensure compliance.
  • Update/refresh as soon as the window open, this means less reminder emails.
  • Have additional users registered on Capacity Tracker to cover periods of absence. Recommendation to have at least 2 - 3 users who can update.
  • Attend training sessions to get a better understanding of the system & how to quickly update their information.
  • Having multiple capacity tracker users ensures arrangements are in place to complete update during periods of absence.
  • Ensure the Manager details are entered and correct in the Contact Directory section of your Capacity tracker profile Guidance for Care homes here and Guidance for Home care here.

To register for a Capacity Tracker account, please click here and please Remember Capacity Tracker cannot be updated from outside the UK.

If you have any problems please contact the Capacity Tracker Support Centre on 0191 691 3729 or at necsu.capacitytracker@nhs.net (Open Monday to Friday from 8am to 5pm excluding public holidays).

Nursing Home Celebrates Afternoon Tea Week - Good News Story

Residents and the team at Heanton Nursing Home celebrated Afternoon Tea Week in style with an enchanting English Garden Themed party. The event celebrated this British tradition while creating a social gathering throughout the home.

The day began with flower arranging which offered a multi-sensory experience which can improve motor skills (the gentle movement of moving hands and fingers) encouraging mobility for those who are less mobile.

The arrangements were then used to decorate their living room at the Barnstaple Nursing Home, perfectly matching the Garden Party theme. The space was further brightened up with balloons and favour bags to get everyone in the celebratory spirit! In the afternoon, thanks to the catering team, an array of beautifully decorated handmade cakes, biscuits, sandwiches (and of course tea!) were displayed for all to enjoy. Trays were prepared and taken up to the rooms of the less mobile family members.

Lesley Heale, a Care Assistant at Heanton Nursing Home, commented ‘just the little extras like the pretty plates and cardboard teapots made it so special for us all.”

Level 2 Adult Social Care Certificate now available for non-regulated staff

The Level 2 Adult Social Care qualification is an accredited qualification designed to provide a baseline standard to care, reduce the need for repeat training and give career profession recognition to our care workforce.

In 2021, the Department of Health and Social Care commissioned Skills for Care to develop a specification based upon the existing Care Certificate standards for a new, accredited and portable qualification, the Level 2 Adult Social Care Certificate qualification.

The Level 2 Adult Social Care Certificate qualification is an Ofqual regulated qualification, requiring observational assessment and is expected to take a new learner around 6-8 months to complete. An experienced care worker may complete this in a shorter period of time and the qualification is available now to eligible non-regulated care staff, 19+ years.

Benefits of enrolling staff for this qualification

Currently 54% of direct care workers do not have a level 2 or above qualification. The introduction of the Level 2 Adult Social Care Certificate qualification will provide people in care roles the most up to date knowledge and baseline skills required to support people well and succeed in their roles.

For those who have been in the sector for several years and deserve acknowledgement for the skilled care they provide, the qualification will also provide a route for them to gain a recognised qualification.

Investing in training and support for staff will act as an incentive for staff recruitment, retention and development within the workforce. The qualification webpage will be continually updated with information about the awarding organisations approved to deliver the qualification.

Funding changes

The Learning and Development Support Scheme will have a digital online claims service that allows adult social care employers to claim funding for certain training courses and qualifications on behalf of eligible care staff. Funding will be available for eligible courses and qualifications that have been both paid for and started between 1 April 2024 and 31 March 2025 (inclusive).

The Learning and Development Support Scheme approved course list includes the Level 2 Adult Social Care Certificate Qualification. Eligible employers can claim funding for the Level 2 Adult Social Care Certificate on behalf of eligible care staff for up to £1500 per qualification.

This funding is more limited than the previous scheme with no dedicated funding specifically for the Level 2 Adult Social Care Certificate. For full details please check the government information on funding guidance and how to claim.
